Ghastly Beginning to Classic Comic Series1
Volume 1 of the color Sundays Flying Buttress classics library presents the comic strip in which the Dragon Lady appeared for the first time.

Note that originally the Sunday pages represented a separate story-line from the daily strips, which are not included here. NBM reprinted the dailies in a separate collection which are also part of the Flying Buttress classics library.

Young Terry Lee accompanies his older friend Pat Ryan, who is looking for "true color" for "a story about China." The result is quite a colorful story as Terry and Pat are kidnapped by "the most notorious woman pirate in China," Lai Choi San aka the Dragon Lady of Bias Bay. The cruel beauty falls hard for Pat's Irish charm, but is less impressed by the pert Terry until he misidentifies her to save her from arrest. Back in Shanghai Pat and Terry reunite with George Webster "Connie" Confucius, who helps our heroes take a flight to the Gobi Desert. On board they meet pretty Sherry Granger before the plane is hijacked by an agent of bandit chief "the Skull." The action soon shift's from the Grangers'... oil mine? ...to the Dragon Lady's fortress at Hurricane Point. A U.S. battleship eventually sets the boys free but it takes more than that to stop the Dragon Lady, who returns to condemn the boys to hard labor. However the tables are turned in episode 46, "Yellow Peril on the Yellow River," when pirate Cap'n Blaze captures the entire party and puts the Dragon Lady to work cooking and cleaning. She winds up telling the story of her nickname to Connie.
