Product Description

This book starts by establishing that all believers in Christ are already, in fact, one with each other in Christ. This leaves us with the challenge, not of creating unity where it does not exist, but of living consistently with the oneness that already exists. The first section explains why living consistently with our oneness is important, including God's commands and expectations, the benefits of living in oneness and the hazards of living contrary to the truth. Part two explains what oneness is and is not, including the concepts that oneness is a harmony of diverse believers each doing their own part, not unison, unanimity or strict conformity to the same mold. The third section deals with practical barriers to living in oneness-selfishness, misunderstandings, heresy, and incorrect understanding of the origin of the organizational divisions in the universal Church-and suggests how to overcome them.

Living Consistently with being One in Christ5
"Our Oneness in Christ" is a refreshing, long awaited for reminder of the need to live consistent with our position as believers. We are one with Christ and in Christ. Ian Johnson and Lauston Stephens provide insights often overlooked in today's literature, pulpits, and seminaries. These important truths are overshadowed by church tradition, denominational prejudice, and individual indifference.

The first section of the book answers the question: Why living consistently in oneness with Christ is important. The authors discuss God's expectation of us, the benefits and pitfalls of living in opposition to this truth. They go on to reflect on what oneness in Christ is and is not, including the divergent concepts held among Christians regarding living in harmony. The final chapters deal with stumbling blocks to living in oneness, including, misunderstandings on concepts of authority, submission, heresy and the differences between the essential church and the ordered church.

I personally appreciated the thoughts from John 17 as Jesus prayed to the Father for oneness to be manifest among the believers.

"Our Oneness in Christ" is a book written in layman's language. Supporting scriptures reinforce the importance of the subject matter. The detailed bibliography and thorough end notes make this an excellent reference tool and resource for further study for adult Bible classes, small group Bible study, or individual study. A much needed book on a subject close to God's own heart.
