Product Description
Cheat Sheet For The Working World is intended to inform and educate current and prospective members of the working world about the realities inherent to the workplace that have not been learned in schools or elsewhere.
If you are or have been a member of any workforce, you surely remember being puzzled by a situation involving you, your peer, your boss or an employee. It took you some time to understand what was happening and even longer to react in a safe and acceptable manner, if you were party to it. And, if you have been in a position of responsibility, you know how complex decision-making can be when dealing with people and handling financial and management operations.
Cheat Sheet For The Working World is an attempt to share concrete life experiences and insights of the many aspects of the working world. Throughout the book, case stories are illustrated in an effort to bring awareness to the reader. They are intended to increase alertness for the new arrivals in the Operations Management arena and to all others bound to be part of the working environment in which these happenings are common nature. It is also the hope that lessons will be learned that will help improve behaviors and raise consciousness and sense of responsibility of the various members of the workforce.
The content is divided in chapters dealing with recruitment, particulars of the job of an Operations Manager, performance appraisal, gender and social issues, social responsibilities, the day to day realities in the workplace, politics and discrimination, domestic management for those out posted in countries where help at home is almost mandatory, and some relevant tips on security and other matters. The book also contains cartoon illustrations to bring facts to life with humor.
The issues addressed are those that are common place in the day to day routine but that we do not think about until we have to deal with them. It is my hope that readers can identify with or understand the individuals and situations and will use the descriptions to generate thoughts and develop shock absorbers.
The author's extensive work as an Operations Manager with an international entity has brought her to many countries where she could experience first hand the complexity of actions, interactions and reactions amongst the various members of the working world. She has also witnessed the positive and negative impacts of the consequences of these behaviors. In addition, her association and exchanges with peers and acquaintances in this line of work in various types of businesses have widened her understanding of these relationships and helped her find better approaches to deal with the uncommon circumstances so inherent to the workplace.
Having been on both sides of the fence in close to 30 years as an employee and supervisor/manager, she has discovered that the workplace can be a better place and a more productive environment if less time was spent dealing with unnecessary issues and people had the awareness to avoid them to begin with. She is happy to share her knowledge and experiences to expose some aspects of the working world that are not in any curriculum and that have not been included in textbooks and in rules and regulations of entities.

About the Author
Odette came to the United States of America from Haiti in 1971. She attended school to learn more of the English language and obtain a Bachelor degree from Baruch College of the City University of New York, in Business Administration majoring in Accounting.
She spent the majority of her career in an international organization, working in the United States and abroad. She occupied various functions growing through the ranks in the administration area, to ultimately become Department Chief of Operations at headquarters and, Deputy Representative/Head of Operations of her organization abroad. In these functions, she oversaw the management of Finances, Human Resources and General Administrations.
Odette's work brought her in contact with individuals of all ranks and files of the hierarchy. She got the opportunity to discover various sides and personalities of human nature and observe their actions and reactions under different circumstances. She has often been amazed at the sequence of events, what triggers them and the consequences resulting from the way they are handled.
Because of her track record and the various positions she occupied along her career in the Administration and Management fields, she has been called upon by peers, subordinates as well as senior management colleagues to provide advices and counseling to help out in decision-making or to interpret difficult situations and provide guidance. Drawing on the vast experiences gathered from her career and that of friends and acquaintances in other line of businesses, the thought came to her to package the lessons learned into case studies and make them available to others. As her advices have helped her peers and colleagues, she thought this information could give advance notice to others of the working world and help them understand certain mechanism of this environment and be better prepared to face some of its challenges. She hopes that the readers will learn something they can apply in their professional and personal life and that the book will influence their behavior and attitude vis a vis their entities, fellow colleagues and employees.
Odette has also discovered that straightforwardness, integrity, strength of character coupled with patience, humility, compassion and perseverance can take one over the many bumps that are bound to surge along a career path.
