This book is a good introduction on the topic. For more depth about the practice and execution of typography go back to Ellen Lupton's New Basics or her Thinking With Type.

Buy new: $66.50 / Used from: $59.81 The ultimate book on Charles and Ray Eames. I know they did way more than Graphic Design, but it was always a major part of their process. Whether it was advertising, a project proposal, or and anambitious exhibition such as Copernicus or Mathmatica, they did almost everything in house. They were simply the best! Another treasure for any design library.
