The Hip Hope legacy continues....
The Hip Hope compilation series continues with the 2009 edition. This release sounds somewhat better than the last outing. Besides it's usually being executive produced by Gotee's presidents, Toby "TobyMac" Mckeehan and Joey Elwood, it's now produced by TobyMac's DJ of choice and former Gotee artist, Mike "DJ Maj" Allen, through his Fistpic Productions banner.
It also features some of Gotee Records's alumnus (Verbs, Grits and former LA Symphony member, Pigeon John) and some other recognizable artists including Pettidee, KJ-52 (featuring Teron "Bonafide" Carter of Grits), Shonlock, sister act girl group V3, The Washington Projects (previously known as Souljahz), new Gotee artist B. Reith, Gospel singer/producer Canton Jones, Knine, LA Symphony frontman/producer Flynn Adam Atkins, background singer/rapper Curtis "CZ" Zachary (check credit booklet) and legendary frontman, Speech of 1990s hip-hop group, Arrested Development. Added to the mix are new artists Jade Harrell (featuring Stacy "Coffee" Jones of Grits) and Stefan the Scientist (both out of Grits's Revolution Art label), Proxy and J Remy. To add to the humor, Pigeon John and Flynn Adam Atkins join forces to become the duo Rootbeer.
What a review without its downsides? Boring, that's what....
Gripe #1: What, no songs by Liquid, Mars Ill or John Reuben? That's a first, but according to the credit booklet included, John Reuben is coming out with new music sometime this year. One Liquid song from his "Tales From the Badlands" release would have been nice. From what I've read about Mars Ill, they've had some sampling and copyright issues with some of their songs.
Gripe #2: Why didn't they just put Rootbeer's "Chimpanzee" song on the CD version too instead of only by downloading it? I was kind of mad about that, but fortunately, I heard their song by way of Hip Hope Hits's website. Pretty funny song.
Gripe #3: Two songs that stuck out like sore thumbs....Washington Projects with "Come Back to Me" and J Remy's hardcore-esque, psychotic tune, "Cut Me". I know that Gotee is hurting for songs and talent, but they really need to listen to the lyrical content in both songs. Some, maybe all, might find them tettering on homicidal and/or suicidal thoughts and tendencies. Two bad song choices for this volume.
Other than that, rounding it out are some hidden bonus tracks provided by underground Christian artists Pro.com and Othello and produced by DJ Maj himself. It also features hidden shoutouts from DJ Promote, former BeatMart Recordings artist, DJ Morph, and a few other DJs. A great move because you'll get that mixtape feeling while you're listening.
Usually, I didn't care for TobyMac's last three submissions in this series, but since Liquid Beats remixed one of his Portable Sounds songs, kudos to Liquid Beats and thanks to DJ Maj for including it. Liquid's Spanish guitar added some flavor to the tune.
In conclusion, I recommend this release because not only does it continues to represent the Lord through its rhymes and beats, but it seems like it feels more like an international "who's who" mixtape of both seasoned and fresh new talents.
May the Lord be blessed with this and that the artists will continue to give the Lord all of the praise that He deserves.
Be blessed.
Marketing creation
I think that it is disappointing when a album states on the front that it contains the best in Christian hip hop of 2009, but it doesn't even have any of the best artists on the album. No Lecrae, no Flame, no Shai Linne, no Trip Lee. Come on. You can call it hits from 2009, but don't label it the best of holy hip hop. People know better.
Cut Me?
My 8 year old daughter likes Christian Hip Hop. I thought that it would be a great CD for her to have. I am so disapointed with the song, "Cut Me" - it scared her...I told her that she didn't have to listen to it if she didn't want to. She turned it off right away!
