Customer Reviews
powerful but picky
Protools is a powerful tool for editing music but can be rather picky in terms of the hardware it needs. Also, other software that is running on the computer can affect its performance, and it has to be "tweaked" to run efficiently. I'm not expert on it, but I've got it running so I can accomplish most of what I want to do. However, I use the Cubase that came with my Yamaha keyboard to do midi orchestrations.
When I upgraded to PT 8 I could no longer use my Ivory piano software, which I had used without difficulty prior to the upgrade. Bummer. When I tried reinstalling the Ivory, I lost all my presets. It still didn't work, and Digidesign support didn't have an answer other than telling me my hardware must not be compatible (keep in mind, it worked before the upgrade). Now I use Cubase for all my midi programming, and upload the wave files to Protools for further editing, if I need to.
There is no way I could have foreseen the software problems, but you just have to be careful with Protools because it is a very picky program. But I use it, and I like it overall. Just can't give it 5 stars.
