"No Mess" my A**
The commercials and item descriptions for moon sand say "No Mess." I know this because my 4 year old can quote the commercial word for word. The commercial LIES. After an hour of play, I have moon sand all over my house. This stuff is no different than bringing a bucket full of damp sandbox sand into your house and letting your kid play with it. Goodness help us if he ever figures out it comes in glitter colors too.
The 4 year old, of course, LOVES this stuff. I can't drag him away from it. The learning curve was minimal. In fact, he told me how to use the plungers. He picked one up and immediately started making "treasure" and walls.
I gave this 2 stars due to its gigantic mess factor and the fact it's freaking expensive. To sweep half of it up after each play session just makes me cringe. All I can see is money in my dustpan. If my kid didn't like it, I'd be giving it 1 star and taking it back to the store.
Usually worth the mess
First things first, yes, this product makes more of a mess than the manufacturer claims. My daughter is 5 years old and tries to be pretty careful with it, but still manages to spill on the floor. Cleanup for me takes around 10 minutes (skip the broom and use the vacuum).
That being said, on most days it's worth the cleanup time. She will sit at the kitchen table, away from the television, and happily/quietly create things out of this sand for a good hour and a half at a time. I like that she's using her imagination, working on fine motor skills and being so creative with it. Granted, there are days when I don't feel like dealing with the clean-up, and on those days I am honest with her - "honey, it's just too messy today & I need the kitchen table to get ready for dinner now." She's old enough to understand that. Usually, though, it's not a big issue. At least for 5 year olds, this sand is worth it.
Our answer to the mess
My granddaughter loves her moon sand and especially with the onset of cold days this is the first thing she reaches for. Our answer to the mess is an old sheet on the floor. She plays and spills and when she's done we gather the 4 corners and pour the sand back into the case and then hang the sheet outside for awhile. Then it's ready for the next time.
