From the New York Times bestselling author of the Night Huntress series comes a breathtaking new journey to the dark side of desire.
The night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows—her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield—and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family's past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness—and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her.
He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human—even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together . . .
Because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

First Drop of Crimson
It has been a year since Denise lost her husband by paranormal means. It's only normal that she wouldn't want to have anything to do with that world after such a loss. But when evil rears its ugly head, she'll have no say in the matter. With Cat and Bones on the other side of the world, Denise's only help comes from Spade, master vampire. Ever since meeting they've always felt a pull towards each other. Plus there's definitely an attraction on both sides, and at the same time neither of them will admit it. Spade refuses to fall in love with a human again and Denise wants nothing to do with the world of vampires. Stubborn creatures, but you gotta love them.
I absolutely loved this book, a must read. First Drop of Crimson was a fun, enticing read. This story was refreshing, dark and passionate. Spade and Denise are magic, their chemistry jumps off the page. Jeaniene Frost is a master at pulling you into a story from page one, and that's exactly what you get with this book. I love that Spade got his own book. I found him quite interesting in the Night Huntress series and was hoping we get to learn more about him.
A must-read for all Night Huntress fans
Plot Summary: This book picks up one year after Denise lost her husband in the zombie attack. After a rash of mysterious deaths in her family, Denise comes face-to-face with a vengeful demon. Her ancestor sold the demon his soul, and then disappeared. The demon brands Denise, and orders her to find the missing man or he'll kill her, and her family. Cat and Bones are currently underground, so Denise turns to her only supernatural contact, master vampire Spade.
It's hard not to draw comparisons against the first book in the Night Huntress series, so I'm going to stop fighting it and address the all-important question... Did I like "First Drop of Crimson" as much as "Halfway to the Grave"? No, it wasn't quite that magical, BUT it was extremely entertaining. It's an absolute must-read for any fan of Jeaniene Frost's work, and I highly recommend it to all paranormal romance fans, with one cavet (at the bottom).
The first half of the book has Spade and Denise searching for her demon-dealmaking ancestor within vampire society. They pretend to be lovers, but soon the farce feels like the real thing, which confuses Denise horribly. To be honest, I wasn't feeling the romance so much in the beginning, since Denise was too shellshocked by her past and present circumstances to entertain any happy thoughts.
The second half is when everything clicked for me, and a big part of that was getting to see so many of my favorite characters back in action again. Yes, we get to hang out with Cat and Bones, Ian, and Mencheres again (sorry, no Vlad). When Bones popped on the scene for the first time it was like having a light bulb click on. As much as I like Spade, he's a bit dull compared to Bones's savagely funny personality. For that matter, Denise is no Cat, but by the end she goes on the offensive, and she makes me proud. It's not easy being the only human in this elite club, although Denise gets her own special mojo too (I think somebody owes me $20).
In my opinion this spin-off is totally dependent on the Cat and Bones books. A new reader shouldn't start "First Drop of Crimson" without reading the books in the Night Huntress series first. And really, why would anyone want to anyway? The point is, Ms. Frost doesn't waste time explaining stuff that's already happened, and she expects her readers to know who these characters are already. It works for me.
There's a fabulous teaser at the very end for the next Night Huntress World book, which features Mencheres. The guy is 4,000 years old. I'd call it a May-December romance, but it's more like a B.C./A.D. romance. I'm just kidding - I'm really looking forward to seeing the sad guy smile.
Another Hit!
This book keeps you captivated from the very beginning. The characters are both charismatic and entertaining, there is not a shortage of action or romance, overall it is a splendid read. If you are a fan of Jeaniene Frost and the Night Huntress series, this is a book you simply do not want to miss!
