Plone
Plone is an open source content management system built on the powerful object-oriented Zope application server. Easy to use, powerful, extensible, and well-supported by an extensive team of developers and contributors, Plone has quickly become one of the most popular open source content management servers.

Plone has support for internationalization, complies with accessibility and usability standards, can run on various platforms, and is highly extensible. Plone is ideal as an intranet and extranet server, document publishing system, portal server, and a groupware tool for collaboration between separately located entities.

Like any feature-rich, complex system, Plone can have a steep initial learning curve. This makes good documentation essential for both the beginner and expert alike. For users new to Plone, this book provides a structured pathway through set up and initial customization. Experienced Plone developers will learn how to leverage the full capability of this powerful application.

About the Author
J. Cameron Cooper has been playing around on the web since there wasn't much of a web with which to play around. He was introduced to Zope right around the time it came out and quickly saw the light, but only after graduating from Rice University in 2002 (a few years too late for the dot-com boom) did he begin to make any money from it. He has followed the CMF and Plone for most of their lives, too, and built most of the groups interface for Plone, under the sponsorship of the Connexions Project [cnx.rice.edu], among other contributions. He lives in Houston, Texas and wears many hats.

Customer Reviews

*The* beginner book on Plone5
I bought Andy McKay's "The Definitive Guide to Plone" and while it may indeed be that, it is not something for the newcomer to Plone to dive right into. McKay is really for the system developer who is charged with installing, configuring and extending Plone. It's not for content managers, and I find myself more in that category these days.

I managed to familiarize myself with the basics by searching through the Plone.org website, but I still didn't really have a very good vision of the scope of Plone, how it could be used, or how it should best be configured for my use. Even looking at sites that used Plone, had a lot of questions about how it could be used in my applications.

Enter Cooper's book. This is an excellent all-encompassing guide that lays out what Plone is, what it can be made into, and how to go about creating usable Plone sites. Perfect for the absolute beginner, the web designer, content manager, or the developer looking for guidance on what can be done with Plone. Five minutes thumbing through it in a local shop convinced me I needed to add this one to my library.

Great Books5
JCCooper did a splendid job on writing Building Websites with Plone. As a newbie to Plone and Zope, I need all the help I can get.
JCC provides very good examples of how Plone works and why it works.
Well written and very well editied unlike other Plone books it is a pleasure to read and study.

Finally, a comprehensive book on Plone5
I have another book on Plone which is not as well organized, in-depth, or easy to understand as Cooper's own book. Thanks for finally publishing a comprehensive, worthwhile book on Plone!!!
