Album Description
Amy's affection for her island music is totally visible in this collection. Amy's kama'aina family roots vibrate joyously with the sound of her unusual musical accomplishment and performance in this, her first truly Hawaiian album. A contemporary, yet respectful, exciting musical adventure performed by a young, consummate artist who understands the importance of the musical traditions of old Hawai'i and the gift of freedom of musical expressions bestowed on the now generation of Hawai'i.
About the Artist
There are as many styles and categories of music in Hawai'i as there are singers and musicians. Since the beginning, when Hawaiian entertainers began to be heavily influenced by outside, off-island musical sounds and styles, Hawaiian musicians and singers took the new sounds and instruments and quickly placed their own stamp of ownership on them. The beat, the pulse of the music, irrespective of the tempo, began to penetrate the presentation of most songs, creating a new, vibrant style.
As new artists emerge, they add to the musical forms of the past and bedeck the matrix of the style with their own artistic personalities which become unique garlands of new, musical nuances. Two such artists are AMY and WILLIE K.
"Upon leaving a private music school in California, my grandmother, Jennie, spoke to me about the importance of Hawaiian music. Knowing that I was classically trained, she asked me to try and practice Ha'i. I fell in love with it. Everything I had ever learned about music was in this style of singing. Keeping in mind the female legends of Hawaiian music, Aunty Genoa Keawe, Lena Machado, Kealoha Kalama, and Leina'ala Haili, I tried to write in a traditional form, but with my own style. I hope to take you back in time when music was simple, beautiful, and pure. This is from my heart." Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom

New Generation, Old Traditions
Traditional Hawaiian Music beautifully done. Brings you back to Hawaii then, appreciating our homeland. For others, listening to Amy will give you the feeling of being in Hawaii and what the people and culture here is all about. A Favorite is Haleiwa Hula. Haleiwa is a town on the Northshore of the Island of Oahu; a town that was Queen Lili'uokalani's playground. Enjoy!!
Me ka leo NUI!
About 2 years ago, I was at the Cazimero's May Day Concert when out booms this voice like no tomorrow. HO ka, Aunty can sing! I was full-on blown away.. it gave me chicken-skin that I remember to this day. Such good fun! My favorites: Hale'iwa Hula (very catchy, playful song & was on KCCN for the longest) & I Ali'i never fails to inspire that mane'o feeling.. =^^= I highly recommend this album if you like falsetto like Aunty Genoa (cover look familiar, eh?).. a new generation to carry on the tradition with a modern twist here & there.
Mahalo, Amy
Anytime Amy & Willie K get together, something magical happens. Aside from being the most beautiful woman in Hawaiian music, Amy has a voice that is at once contemporary and timeless. She brings her own voice to this collection of Hawaiian classics, and while she makes them her own, she never forgets the heritage of the music. Cool, relaxing, and beautiful...
