Joseph Cotton's performance as Uncle Charlie is one of the most menacing in all of film. Without any physical violence, Cotton creates a character that is both chilling and charming. Cotton deserved at the very least an Oscar nomination.

Even though Ida Lupino received top billing, this is the film that elevated Bogart from supporting character to leading-man status. As taxi dancer Marie, Lupino's performance is a mixture of street-smart toughness and little-girl vulnerability. The film's last scene is Lupino's and she breaks your heart.

Linda Darnell was another beautiful actress who rarely got credit for her acting. In this film, Darnell more than holds her own with the talented ensemble cast. As the girl--literally--from the wrong side of the tracks, her characterization of Lora Mae is spot on and her sarcastic interplay with screen husband Paul Douglas is a joy to behold.
