About the Author
Bernice McCarthy received her doctorate from Northwestern University in education and is one of the founders of the learning styles movement. She is the creator of the 4MAT Model, an innovative, research-based teaching model that is being used by organizations worldwide to improve learning effectiveness. She has presented the concepts in this book through numerous workshops and keynote sessions around the world.

Jeanine O Neill-Blackwell has nearly 20 years of experience as a sales trainer, corporate trainer, senior-level human resources leader, and president of a corporate university. As a partner in a school management company, she has designed and implemented large-scale, train-the-trainer initiatives. She is president and CEO of 4MAT 4Business.

A Great Way to Design Training5
I have read many of Bernice McCarthy's books and this one is the most concise, concrete, and practical book she's published. The book's central message is simple - when we design training that honors the learning styles of our participants, we are most likely to create a learning experience that is engaging, practical, and applicable to their lives.

Bernice and her co-author, Jeanine, explain the 4MAT learning model, left-brain and right-brain processing, and a simple and powerful process for designing effective training. They talk about the importance of figuring out the learning outcomes, organizing the content, and identifying/defining the concept that underlies the content. Even though they don't talk a lot about auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning, these three approaches are implicitly captured in the 4MAT model.

I have been using the 4MAT model to design professional training for many years and I am ecstatic to see that Bernice has published this book. Bernice's 4MAT model has been extremely influential in the work I do as a professional instructional designer and a workshop design coach that it's become one of the most valuable models I use to design and facilitate learning. I'm relieved that this book does not contain the flowery, poetic language of most of Bernice's previous books. This one is accessible, readable, and practical. Buy it and transform the way you think about how learning should be designed and experienced.

Great Book, down to earth5
Very good book to teach how to train. It can be applied to both hard and soft skills, no matter what the subject. It gets a bit repetitive towards the end, but it gives you the very points you have to watch in yourself and others to make a training successful. I've been running technical classes for years, with some formal training on delivering training, and this book explained to me some teaching tools that I was using but I did not clearly know how they worked. Also, very easy reading and to the point.

Author Bernice McCarthy developed the "4MAT teaching model," an innovative instructional method that leverages the latest neurological research about right-brain and left-brain thinking. The 4MAT approach allows people with different learning styles to absorb new subject material, retain the information and put it to practical use. McCarthy teams up with corporate trainer Jeanine O'Neill-Blackwell to explain how to use the 4MAT model. The title of their book is particularly apt because, alas, the lay reader can get lost. Perhaps in an effort to be authentically academic, the authors have burdened their text with jargon. It is filled with "mindmaps," "hemisphericity divisions" and "stream of consciousness dumping," as well as the probably unnecessary deconstruction of various English words into their Latin derivatives. However, with patience, getAbstract believes that HR managers, course designers, trainers and teachers can unlock the genuinely useful insights offered by this guide to teaching and learning.
