Perfect solution
I traded in my DLO leather case - soft and lovely - but totally impratical.
I also stopped using an iFrogz treadz case because it covered the proximity sensor (translation - you hang up on people because the touch screen isn't disenagaged when you put the phone to your head). This Speck case however is designed to leave the sensor open.
OK - the Speck -- I love it. It is tough. It's not pretty - but it's functional. The design lets you flip the phone in, so it has total screen protection.
The belt clip can pivot, so you can have it on its side, up, or anywhere in between.
Also, I have dropped this before, and the phone landed on its face on the sidewalk. The rubber case creates a raised frame around the screen, so there were no scratches-- it worked like a charm.
The only downside is the large belt clip. It's versatile, but it pokes my belly. I blame myself because I am FAT. :) Thinner people won't even notice.
This case saved my marriage. Oh yeah, and my iPhone.
My iPhone is a week old. One week. One. This is important to remember.
One week old. Today, in fact.
After thoroughly reviewing what feels like every iPhone case available, I purchased the Speck Toughskin. I liked the look, and it appeared as though it had a high "grip factor." Like most silicone cases, it attracts dust. So what?
This morning, the clip proved to be a liability. It was clipped to an inside pocket of my tote bag (probably not in "clip mode" but more likely the clip was in the less secure "stand mode.") Anyway, as I was exiting my SUV my iPhone went flying and landed face down on the pavement - a vertical drop of 3 feet. My heart was quite literally in my throat, wondering how I was going to explain this $400 destruction to my husband.
Imagine my - what? Delight, Amazement...no, RELIEF to discover that my iPhone had suffered NO injuries during this potentially-catastrophic mishap. None - no internal issues, no cosmetic injuries. Nada.
I rated the Toushskin 4 stars. Now, the clip definitely needs improvement. My iPhone likely would not have flown out of my tote bag if it had a more secure clip. Although I am aware that some "operator-error" may have been involved here. But the fact that the Toughskin was able to save my iPhone (and my marriage) from destruction is beyond measure.
Thanks, Speck!
Speck case feels great
This case is great. I love the iphone, it has a good weight and build quality to it. Add this case and it does in fact make your iphone feel tough while at the same time providing good finger grip. It has a very industrial look and feel.
I'm not a fan of fancy cases that have built in clips or headphone winders or anything like that. I wanted something that was simple, slim enough to slide in my pocket but if I dropped the phone could take a beating. This case fits those needs.
The belt clip really isn't that great, it's very cheap feeling and only works to stand the iPhone up vertically. I don't use it, I don't trust it. So if you're looking for a belt clip solution this probably isn't it.
My only other complaint is that the material it's made out of and color picks up pocket lint and hair pretty easily. So it's not going to stay shiny black for more then the first few minutes. After that it gets very matte rubbery looking, which I kind of prefer, but I still find myself pulling hairs off of it.
It doesn't offer any screen protection, but then again the iPhone has a tempered glass screen so it won't scratch like video ipods. In fact I'm not sure putting anything on the screen would help at all. If it hits hard enough even a thin film protector isn't going to stop it from breaking and if you put a hard polycarbonate plastic cover over it you'll just have to annoyingly remove that cover every time you want to use the phone. When buying this case I was more worried about denting or scuffing the aluminum and corners while providing some level of shock resistance to falls.
