Alpha and Omega
I plugged this Hi-Speed precision instrument in, hooked it up to my computer and it performed like a fine piece of machinery.....for two days. Then suddenly neither my desktop nor laptop computers would recognize the drive. I loaded my music, photos and personal files onto the drive and couldn't access any of it. I performed every function suggested on Iomega's web site to resolve the problem, but nothing worked. Much to Iomega's credit though, they issued me an RMA, and if I ship it back at my expense they will replace the drive. I hope I have better luck with the replacement.
*This is an update to my previous one star review.
Iomega sent me a remanufactured hard drive and, so far, it is working very well. Defective merchandise is possible no matter what brand you buy and though I had to pay to return the defective HD, Iomega responded promptly. I will revise my one star rating to a four star rating.
It just flat-out works.
I have a Dell with Windows XP and the computer came with a backup program that works like a champ. I just start the program in the evening and the next morning, I see it took care of the whole thing (7.5 hours for 65G of data). I then hauled the drive over to my daughter's house and backed her computer up so now, both of us are officially ready for a crash.
We are very pleased.
it's grrrrreat!
i've been wanting an external hd for some time. i've actually experienced full system failures and fatal hard disk failures on several occasions and lost EVERYTHING, and i was sick of it. i was at best buy and i saw a 200g external hd for like $130 and i thought "hmm that's a great deal!". i went home later on and went to their website to check it out and buy it. i was actually at the "review and submit order" page when i thought to look at amazon. and here is where i ended. i saw this hd, with more than 50% more space for like $30 cheaper and good reviews, and i had to go with it.
this was probably the best investment i've made toward my laptop. it only has like 20g internal hd, and i was running thin on free space, specifically due to my itunes collection. i got this hd and moved my collection to it [i suggest skimming over a forum before trying to move your collection to a remote drive]. "installation" or "setup" for this hd is virtually nonexistent... you plug it in and turn it on and let it work automatically with your computer to transfer and install the drivers and such, and you're ready to go.
this hd is SUPER fast. i was expecting it to be a little sluggish. i thought "well, it's a HARD DRIVE connected through a USB, how fast can it really be?". it's fast. i plug in the usb and switch it on and five seconds later i can access everything on it. i can play music, videos, open documents, anything from it... just as fast as if it was all on my local, internal hd. and transferring TO the hd is almost as fast. i transferred about 15g of music in like 10 minutes. i was expecting to initiate the copy and leave it for the night. nope. 15 minutes after opening the box, i was listening to music straight from the external hd!
the longest i've ever left it on continuously is only a couple days at a time, but even then, it seems to keep cool relatively well. i've not yet experienced any overheating issues [nor do i expect to - it's a great product, and i've always trusted iomega]
this is an EXCELLENT buy! you're not going to find more space for less money. simple, reliable, inexpensive.
