Customer Reviews
Well Done!
Like another reviewer, I was quite skeptical that this speaker would deliver a respectable sound and charge, but I was pleasantly surprised. I tested/used this with an iPod Classic, 1st generation, and it worked flawlessly.
What I Like:
- The footprint: it is lightweight (about 1.5 lbs) and travels well
- Clean lines -- matches iPod/Apple design mindset: aesthetically pleasing, no distracting features, will probably blend into any office, bedroom...anywhere; very neutral in form
- Simple interface (on/off/power save mode, volume control, A/C plug); quick start -- just connect the iPod/iPhone and rock!
- When plugged in, it charges the iPod and obviously its battery; a small flashing green light indicates that it's charging its batteries properly
- Long battery life -- it is advertised at 20 hours, but the max I tried it was 8 hours and it was fine and it seemed to have enough juice to go longer if required
- Sturdy build - seems quite durable for portability, not too many parts that can "break" easily
- Fairly long power supply cord for recharging
What I Didn't Like:
- Some very "slight" distortion when the volume is cranked to the max; but I guess that's to be expected; otherwise for a portable speaker system, it performs very well. The bass is the most affected; but not bad considering the form factor of the unit
- I had to take my iPod out of its protective case to connect with this unit; would be nice if I could leave the cover on like when using my iPod with my car or headset
Suggested Improvements:
- Carrying case
- Remote control for iPod control and volume control from a distance
- Battery Life indicator (similar to iPod's battery icon) so user can "see" how much juice remains
In short; for its size, it does what it says quite well. No complaints from me...
A serviceable product although pricey for the sound quality
Although I have been a long-time iPod owner/user, I have never gotten around to purchasing or using an external speaker prior to this one, other than when using my car's own speaker system while driving. Now when I arrive at the office I can remove my iPod from my car, take it into my office and plug it into the Logitech Rechargeable Speaker and continue to enjoy my iPod's music throughout my workday. Since the speakers are housed in one unit, I do not have to worry about unsightly speaker wires stretching across the room. The unit, while nice looking, is also relatively unobtrusive and my iPod is easily removed when I leave for the day. Although I do not really have the need for taking the unit anywhere else, its relatively small size makes it quite portable.
Although the sound separation between the speakers is adequate, I would not characterize the sound quality as anything other than serviceable. I have heard much better sound quality in boom boxes that are much cheaper than this unit, which of course, consists of only a pair of speakers. At least with a boom box, you already have a media player of some sort built in, while this unit requires that you have a separate media player, be it an iPod or some other type of player.
Since I am using the unit mainly to provide low volume background music for my office it fulfills my needs. Nevertheless I feel that the current listed price is at least 50% higher than is justified for the quality of the sound emitted by the speakers.
Possibly the best totally portable iPod/iPhone speaker available!
As an audiophile who's spent his entire career in the consumer electronics industry I was a bit skeptical that any "rechargeable" speaker would be worth listening to. However, I think that Logitech has done an admirable job with their new S315i for the iPhone and iPod and can easily recommend it for anyone with an iPod or iPhone who wants an excellent combination of portability and audio performance. It is quite possibly the best such combination available today. And, while the bass performance and stereo separation are both a bit lacking, they're surprisingly good considering the size and portability of the unit. The overall audio performance is quite musical and better than many non-portable iPod speaker docks that I've heard over the years (including some from supposedly top-rated manufacturers of expensive home speakers)!
PROS:
- Great sound, considering the size and portability. Perfect for sharing your portable music library or listening without headphones.
- Plays reasonably loud without major distortion.
- Fully portable - with up to 20 hours of music listening per charge.
- Universal Dock Connector features a unique swivel design that eliminates the need for those pesky model-specific adaptors. We've tried this with an iPhone 3Gs, iPod Touch and iPod Color (4th generation/60GB) and all of them worked just fine. This is a very clever design feature that will, hopefully, show up on other iPod/iPhone accessories.
- Folds flat for travel (only 10.8"W x 5.2"H x 1.8"D when folded) and is reasonably light (less than 1 1/2 pounds).
- Built-in stand swivels down and exposes the protected Universal Dock Connector.
- Unit is attractive, well-designed and appears to be quite sturdily constructed.
- Simple controls, only a power switch (On/Power-Saving/Off) and Volume Up and Volume Down buttons.
- LED indicator shows when unit is turned on as well as indicating current state of battery charge.
- Convenient 3.5mm stereo mini-jack for connecting laptops, video games, non-Apple MP3 players and smartphones, etc.
- Power supply included for recharging internal batteries.
CONS:
- No carrying case (I've got mine in a nicely padded wine bottle bag - fits almost perfectly!). A padded neoprene case would be a very useful accessory.
- Universal Dock Connector only charges the attached iPod or Iphone when plugged into AC power. Not a major problem and a design choice that I'm certain was made to maximize how long the speakers would play while on battery power.
