Product Description

If you'd like to assign MIND OVER MOOD to your clients, but aren't sure about how to incorporate it into practice, you'll find the answers you need in CLINICIAN'S GUIDE TO MIND OVER MOOD. This essential companion guide will show you how to introduce MIND OVER MOOD to your clients, integrate it with your in-session therapy work, increase client compliance in completing home assignments, and overcome common difficulties that may arise. The authors clearly demonstrate how to use MIND OVER MOOD with individuals, couples, and groups, both in session and at home. Brief therapy and inpatient settings are also discussed in detail.

Step-by-step instructions are provided on how to tailor the program to follow cognitive therapy treatment protocols for a range of diagnoses, including depression, anxiety, personality disorders, panic disorder, substance abuse, and complex, multiple problems. Also outlined are ways to use MIND OVER MOOD to pinpoint the development of specific cognitive, affective, and behavioral skills.

The volume is richly illustrated with case examples and sample client-therapist dialogues in every chapter. Guidance is offered on how to review home exercises and worksheets in session and how to perform effective guided discovery. The authors also provide a detailed chapter on setting therapy goals. Creative ways for engaging clients who have negative reactions to a manual are described, as are strategies for maintaining collaboration with clients with personality disorders. Each chapter concludes with a "troubleshooting guide," which therapists can use to navigate impasses, and the book itself concludes with an informative chapter on therapist training and MIND OVER MOOD.

Editorial Reviews

Review
"Mind Over Mood and its companion piece...promise to be classics. No managed care report leaves my desk without a direct reference in the treatment plan to this outstanding set of manuals." --Bruce Webster, Ph.D. in The Orange County Psychologist

"Using the Clinician's Guide to Mind Over Mood with the client manual offers a winning combination. The manual is filled with helpful exercises and strategies for clients; the Clinician's Guide will assist the therapist in making the best use of the manual. If you are looking for ways to maximize client improvement and for a variety of beneficial homework tasks to use with your patients, this is it." --Simon H. Budman, Ph.D., Harvard Community Health Plan & Innovative Training Systems, Inc.

"The authors' Mind Over Mood was an excellent guide for clients. The Clinician's Guide to Mind Over Mood is truly an outstanding cognitive therapy resource for clinicians. The Clinician's Guide can help clinicians apply cognitive therapy to a wide array of problems and includes easy-to-follow guidelines." --John W. Santrock, Ph.D., Univ of Texas at Dallas

"In Mind Over Mood, Greenberger and Padesky produced an absolutely first-rate guide for patients who wanted to learn about cognitive therapy and how to use it to deal with their problems. In Clinician's Guide to Mind Over Mood, the authors have provided an invaluable guide for the clinician to accompany their patient workbook. The guide is clear, concise, and filled with clinical wisdom. It should prove to be a valuable resource for anyone who wants to work with other people and reflects the kind of creativity that keeps cognitive therapy vital and fresh as it matures as a discipline." --Steve Hollon, Ph.D., Vanderbilt University

"...clearly written and well organized....refreshingly clear and detailed in explaining how to use the client manual....the clinician's guide is one of the most culturally sensitive cognitive therapy text I have read....at the end of each chapter there is a "troubleshooting guide" that provides useful information for therapists experiencing an impasse in therapy....the last chapter discusses using the guide and manual in cognitive therapy training. As an educator, I have used and recommended these resources to my students counseling from a cognitive therapy perspective. They have been very useful in teaching therapists-in-training how to move from theoretical understanding to practical application....I highly recommend the Mind Over Mood clinician's guide and client manual. They are welcome additions to the cognitive therapy treatment and training literature." --Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy

"This book shares with its predecessor the virtues of being effectively organized, easy to understand and written with the therapist in mind....I have to admit that my first impression of the guide was to view it as a sort of Cliff's notes for the client treatment manual. However, as I read through it I found that it was filled with many helpful ideas for working with patients at times when the implementation of cognitive strategies might prove challenging....Each issue is discussed in some length and clinical transcripts are offered to illustrate ways of framing a response in situations where these issues arise. Armed with these insights, the clinician is in a better position to anticipate and respond to these potential obstacles....It is very easy to recommend the Clinician's Guide to Mind over Mood. My sense is that therapists whose clients are using the treatment manual will find it useful in a number of ways. By enabling both members of the treatment dyad to 'be on the same page', use of this guide can also enhance the collaborative and relational aspects of the treatment." --International Cognitive Therapy Newsletter

Sad, sad, sad2
I was so excited to get this book and then realized it was really advertising for the book clients are to use. If you flip through this book you will see on each page the authors site their book SO MANY TIMES.... we are educated people and they can't stop citing the book we are reading. Not very helpful sadly.

This book seems an afterthought to the self-help book, and a very poorly written and edited one at that.

There is little or no clinical wisdom here. One is left wondering how much client contact Padesky has.

It would be mind-numbing to use the book in real-life clinical practice... "turn to p 33... turn to p 45... turn to p 79..." .

Not recommended.
