From Booklist
Ages 2-8. Selected, arranged, and translated by popular Mexican performer and songwriter Orozco, this bilingual collection of Latin American folk songs for children is truly a musical treasure. Each of the 27 songs is presented with background notes; lyrics in both Spanish and English; simple arrangements for the voice, piano, and guitar; and suggestions for group sing-alongs and musical games. Gathered from Spanish-speaking countries but including two of Orozco's own songs, the compilation is a programming gold mine. Included are songs for special occasions ("La pi{¤}nata"), counting songs ("El chocolate"), and animal songs ("La ara{¤}na peque{¤}nita"--"The Eensy, Weensy Spider" in Spanish!). There is even a handy subject index to locate appropriate songs. The book is a delight for the eye as well as the ear. In the same shimmering style of magical folk art that she used to illustrate Arthur Dorros' Abuela (1991), Kleven provides bountiful illustrations--the endpapers are sunshine bright with a crisp quilt of yellow flowers, and playful borders that ripple with colorful patterns and miniature pictures line the edge of every page. Full-page scenes of Hispanic families and children and also animals are exuberant with activity and alive with the joy of music. Multicultural collections have been clamoring for books such as this, which works both as a well-crafted resource and a rich and resonant children's book. Annie Ayres

Customer Reviews

Beautiful, practical, easy5
I ordered this product because I simply wanted the guitar chords for the "De Colores" CD. When the book arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the it is a beautiful collection of -- not only the music (guitar and piano) -- but also of illustrations. It is really sweet, giving extra incentive to those wanting to learn to play the songs... and likely fun for kids to look on or use themselves. The songs are simple to play and great to sing. I'm a guitar novice, but I'm making good mileage with this book and its CD.

Fantastic5
This is a winner that is worth buying for any child that is interested in music, rhythem or such. This book contains the words and music to follow and you can also buy the cd. Recommended.

My boys love this book.5
This is a wonderful book of popular songs in Spanish, which my triplet boys latched onto immediately. The songs are very engaging, and each page has lovely artwork. I speak Spanish, and my boys were born in Spain. I have been trying very hard to help them maintain a little Spanish, and this book has been very helpful. It doesn't come with a CD, but you can easily learn the tunes of the songs if you know how to read music. And even if you only speak rudimentary Spanish, I think it's possible to learn the songs and enjoy them.

This book quickly became the boys' favorite bedtime routine. I hear them singing the songs during the day as well. I highly recommend it.
