Product Description

In Audio-Vision, the French composer-filmmaker-critic Michel Chion presents a reassessment of the audiovisual media since sound's revolutionary debut in 1927 and sheds light on the mutual influences of sound and image in audiovisual perception.
Chion expands on the arguments from his influential trilogy on sound in cinema--Las Voix au cinema, Le Son au cinema, and --while providing an overview of the functions and aesthetics of sound in film and television. He considers the effects of evolving audiovisual technologies such as widescreen, multi-track sound, and Dolby stereo on audio-vision, influences of sound on the perception of space and time, and contemporary forms of audio-vision embodied in music videos, video art, and commercial television. His final chapter presents a model for audiovisual analysis of film.

Walter Murch, who contributes the foreward, has been honored by both the British and American Motion Picture Academies for his sound design and picture editing. His is especially well-known for his work on The Godfather, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now.

Chion is the leading French cinema scholar to study the sound track.I know of no writer in any language to have published as much in this area, and of such uniformly high quality as he. -- Alan Williams

Outstanding5
This is the best book I have seen so far on theories for sound design. I used it for my graduate design research thesis 4 years ago at Carnegie Mellon, and I am about to require it for my students at UT next week, for a course in sound design. Chion opened up so many new ideas for me on different ways that sound affects us. Like the book itself, the forward by Walter Murch (considered by many to be a hero in film sound design) is inspiring.

This is how it works!5
I consider this book a "Bible" for Motion Picture Sound Theory: Chion teaches us that also creativity has got rules and we've got to follow these rules to find the way to realize our ideas in the right way.

If you are, or want to be, a sound editor, designer or mixer, you have to read and study this book before learning any software secret: this book will help you to understand how to guide the audience expectations and feelings.

I use this book to bring the great research made by this great composer, filmmaker and teacher to my Sound Design course students.

Good book but too long.4
Good information though written in a wordy style that I disliked. Could have been shorter and had better headings to bring out the structure and information.
