Product Description

Following in the footsteps of its successful predecessor, this new edition introduces the basic tenets of music theory and partwriting skills. A new design features visually striking pedagogical aids, allowing students to progress through ever-more challenging exercises at their own pace or to dip into the text at any point to brush up on specific skills. The authors have retained the self-instructional format of the previous two editions, with tests at the end of each part, while adding new quizzes at the end of each set and a cumulative test for Parts One through Six. Numerous examples from the music literature-a new feature of this edition-reinforce the theoretical concepts covered in each set; an appended study anthology of ten complete pieces allows students to see how individual concepts are woven into the fabric of a composition. The companion CD, keyed to specific frames in each set, provides immediate aural reinforcement.

Programmed Instruction at Its Best5
As someone with eclectic and manifold interests I'm always on the lookout for books that can teach me something...anything. As a teacher myself I'm very sensitive (perhaps overly so) of the failings of most instructional texts. It is always a pleasure to encounter a book that is clearly written, unambiguous, and obviously created by authors who understand the pitfalls their previous students have experienced in learning the subject in question.

This book has those features. The format is very good and the exercises though pedantic and occasionally boring definitely facilitate learning. The concepts of the book could certainly be stated in a quarter of the pages actually used but it's the constant repetition that really makes those concepts stick.

I highly recommend this book. It's not the most "thrilling" read imaginable but you WILL learn the material.

Book Purchase5
This is a book not available in stores and I was thrilled to find it here. This book is a new copy of a very old book with some revisions and arrived in half the stated delivery time. Packaged very well and had all the components that comes with it. Learning Music Theory? Can't go wrong with this book.

thumbs up5
This book explains concepts in much greater detail than other music theory books I have read without being cumbersome. The exercises, quizzes, and exams help commit the information to long term memory. It's a great self-study resource. I highly recommend it.
