Product Description

Anthology for Sight Singing provide a comprehensive, research-based curriculum in aural skills. Informed by Gary Karpinski's groundbreaking research on music perception and cognition and his two decades of practical teaching experience, this innovative package systematically develops ear-training and sight-singing skills based on how students actually learn. This book is companion to Norton's Manual for Ear Training and Sight Singing, and provides a collection of 1200 graded musical excerpts drawn from real music literature. Carefully coordinated with the Manual, this comprehensive anthology is flexible enough to support any aural skills curriculum or to be used alone as a sight-singing text.

Quite Useful4
Overall, I've been pleased with using this book for the past two years. There's a lot of music from standard performance repertoire, which gives a solid foundation and recognition which can aid in musicianship. I'm not sure how the system fares in other school systems, and I'll admit that attending UMass and having Karpinski right there the entire time may have altered the experience. However, I got through the curriculum just fine using the book, and would recommend it for any school's Aural Skills programme.

Anthology for Sight Singing3
The text represents the next step in the evolution of sight singing manuals standing upon the shoulders of the sight singing manual by Robert W. Ottman. The instructor's version contains a CD rom that has excerpts, diction manual and additional exercises. The excerpts are graded, organized and the cd is searchable. It is searchable within certain vocal ranges and abilities. For example, one may search for minor mode excerpts with skips of only scale degrees 1, 3 and 5. There are stepwise excerpts, excerpts with a range of a 5th or smaller, 2 part examples and more. Sources are from classic, folk and pop/jazz (which represents the smaller genre). It is a valuable resource for teachers. It is a step by step approach to sight singing. The work contains a composer's index of works as well. This book corresponds with the Manual for Ear Training and Sight singing

If the Cd allows for printing of the exercises, I would use this manual for handouts to students. Unless required by the teaching program to have students obtain a separate sight singing book, I would avoid using this manual. Today's student can become easily overwhelmed by using yet another book to an already growing stack of books.

As stated before, I feel that this text builds upon the foundation laid by Ottman and represents an important part in the growth of the music theory student. If the traditional harmony texts used within the program do not reflect/integrate sight singing skills then I would recommend this text.
