This is the perfect first collection for many voice students, whether they are teens or college singers or adults. Joan Boytim has selected songs appropriate for each voice type, and has chosen keys that suit the vocal needs of novice singers studying in traditional, generally classical lyric singing. The editions of the songs in these collections are short and straight-forward. Teachers have found these books invaluable. To make the collections even more useful, each volume is offered in a book/companion CD edition with piano accompaniments recorded by pianist Laura Ward. Good beginner collection
I use this collection with all of my teen soprano voice students, and it is an excellent collection. I gave it only four stars for two reasons: first, several of the song accompaniment tracks are too fast in my opinion, and my students have felt the same way. Second, it would have been nice to have a little more variety; most of these are love ballads in the old-fashioned broadway tradition. And, it's a good tradition, but it would have been nice to have a few contemporary broadway songs and some comic pieces to choose from. The mezzo-soprano anthology in this series does a better job of this, and I realize that sopranos are pretty type-cast in broadway. So, overall, it's a great collection. I also appreciate the recorded accompaniment arrangements as they bring out the vocal line, which really helps beginning students. It's definitely an essential for the voice studio if you work with teens or beginning adults. I use these books and Schirmer's 24 Italian Songs with practically every student. [...]
Great Book and CD Combo -- great price
I'm using this book for voice lessons. It has a nice selection of 22 traditional style Broadway standards. The accompaniment cd is very nice and is easy to follow. The score is accessible for most beginner/intermediate pianists. I recommend this title and the price is nice.
