Customer Reviews

An Outstanding Book on Jazz Theory5
My only concern is that there are very few exercises for the student to write, thereby reinforcing the concepts being taught. I read the entire book, and dog-eared the corners of the pages that have exercises or other such areas that I want to focus on more in-depth. However, a few pages at the end of each subject, containing exercises in identification, writing, analysis, etc, would make this a truly outstanding book. However, that is provided to the reader/student who is willing to make it on their own. So I guess the author cannot be blamed for one's lack of motivation and self-sufficiency!

I am eager to get into the other books in this series (Comprehensive Technique for Jazz Musicians: For All Instruments, Jazz Theory Resources: Volume 2). This has helped me, as I am getting ready to get into a BA program in Jazz Studies this fall.

Please be advised, you should have had at least a year of general music theory (college level) before getting this book, and you need to know how to read music, or it will be extremely difficult.

Excellent book5
There is a lot of harmony books out, but this one is the most concise I've ever seen. The difference is, here you find what is really played in jazz unlike the useless standard stuff which normally fills hundreds of pages in most harmony books such as all the pattern-stuff derived from theory facts or e.g. II-V-I mathematics. And one more thing, you can dig it! Buy it!

even being an educated musician with a firm grasp of your craft - there is always new inspiration in Bert Ligons book - I recommend them all!! Full of examples, great ideas and good and sound explanations.
