About the Author
Roger Filiberto needs no introduction to the guitar world, as his students are some of the finest artists in America today. Roger started teaching tenor banjo in 1923. With his experience of playing in the Dixieland music era, he quickly became aware that the succession of chords C, E7, A7, D7, G7, back to C, followed by C7, F, Fm, and then ending with C, A7, D7, G7 to C would train almost any interested student to cope with the "faking" required of banjo players in that era. He taught this sequence of chords in all reasonable keys to all of his students. Beginning in the mid-1920's, Roger taught countless students to play banjo, steel guitar, Spanish guitar, and bass at his studio in New Orleans. After many years of teaching, he published his first book, the Melody Chord System for Spanish Guitar, with Forster in 1936. This publication was followed by a similar book for guitar, Chord Construction and Harmony as Applied to the Guitar, published by Gibson. The Gibson steel guitar book was later republished by Mel Bay Publications, Inc., with a comprehensive one-volume edition issued in 1968 under the title Complete Steel Guitar Method.

Used by my Music instructor
My music instructor assign home study using this book, great tool for studing and practicing skills.
Good straight-forward beginner book
I'm just learning to play bass guitar,I have both this book and Bass guitar for Dummies. I find this book more methodical, it teaches you to read and play the notes one string at a time. It reads like a text book you would get in a music class, but those type of books are the best to learn by. By the end of studying this book you will be able to learn the notes, how to play those notes and you'll learn how to read sheet music. Playing actual songs will be a reality when you finish studying this book. There is also a second volume that will teach you arpeggios and chords to round out your bass apprenticeship. I found it a better learning tool than Bass guitar For Dummies which is more for Experienced beginners to intermediate players
Books With the Instructor in Mind
The beauty of the original Mel Bay book catalog, this book included, is that learning from them without an instructor is like deciphering secret code. The books contain excellent information, but first you must figure out how to understand what they say. I own many Mel Bay titles, and I can honestly say that anything from 1970 or earlier should not be used by a beginner without an instructor to help you understand them. If you're like me though, you'll embrace the challenge and learn about the magic they contain without using an instructor. This is an excellent book for that type adventure!
As for the other reviewers who believe this title to be truly awful, I ask them to give this title another chance. If it seems "cheesy" or "repetitious", try to read more into what is being taught. I think you'll be pleasantly suprised. These books haven't been recommended by music instructors for all these years for nothing. For those who may not comfortable with just learning from the book itself, Mel Bay offers vol.1 and vol. 2 together in another title called, "Complete Electric Bass Method". This "Complete" version includes a CD and DVD which will allow someone to learn from the book along with an audio and visual teaching aid.
Good luck with your studies.
