Product Description

Exploring all aspects of training and preparation, this career manual gives aspiring singer-dancers the specific know-how they need to move from dream to reality. Incorporating advice from numerous performers and other show-business professionals, this friendly guide starts with the basics for beginners: picking the right teachers, identifying the different kinds of dance and voice training needed, and developing an acting style for the musical stage. Behind the scenes information is offered on how to audition, find an agent, get job leads for Broadway, regional stages, summer stock, night- clubs, theme parks, cruise ships, and other performance venues seeking young talent. Job alternatives are even suggested for the less starry-eyed but show-biz-bound!

Michael Allen works as a performing-arts career consultant and teaches at his own dance studio in Colorado Springs.

Customer Reviews

An interesting reference, but better for the younger set.3
There is a lot of decent information in How to Make it in Musicals, but most of it is aimed at children who are interested in being performers when they're older. For adults pursuing a career change, a good amount of the specific information is either mostly irrelevant or mostly unhelpful. In terms of general information, such as general skills or training needed, the book is good, but a completely indispensable guide to a career in musical theatre this book is not.

An Essential Companion5
How To Make It In Musicals is a fantastic book for anyone who's interested in a career in musical theater. It starts at the very beginning with choosing the right dance studio and goes all the way through college to contracts, agents, managers and even the unions. This would also be a helpfull guide for parents whose children have an interest in the performing arts.

Theatrenut7's Father5
If any parent that has a daughter or son that is wanting a career in theatre must read this book, the younger the better. Have your daughter or son read it also. Our daughter at the age of 11 said she wanted to be on Broadway. Her mother & I thought we did the best at helping her pursue her dream. We wish we had read this book back then. After reading this book recently we found out the positive things we did and things we needed to be aware of that would have helped prepare her for her career. Our daughter is now in her second year of College at the University of Miami, majoring in Musical Theatre. The wealth of knowledge that we have gained from this book has better prepared our daughter for what she needs to continue to do to have a career in Theatre. Throughout her career this book will continue to guide and help her at different stages in her career.

This book is not just for those that want to be in Musical Theatre, but for all that want to pursue a career in Theatre. This is a must read book for those who want to pursue their dream in Theatre. It tells the truths and sometimes the harsh realities of what to do and what to expect.
