music and math5
An excellent book for the advanced guitar player. It brings to life the close connection between math and music. Fascinating. I recommend it to all those who are interested in playing the guitar in a far more creative and enlightened way.

Reference, Reference, Reference.3
Ah yes, the Orange book with a daunting name. There is little known about this book because the human unconscious mind automatically decides to make nebulous things scary or dangerous, thus, few people actually buy this book because nobody knows what it's ACTUALLY like. I own it, however, so I will give a good review of it.

This book, seemingly the black sheep of the Guitar Grimoire family, is (in my opinion) a reference book only. When I say that, I mean, there are no exercises or scale runs, no chords or extra frilly things; it does exactly what it says it does.

The book begins with the typical Kadmon style of explaining his...well, style. He talks a bit about the staff and the scales and all of those good things, and then he gets into the actual bulk of the book.

This book to me, looks fairly identical to Scales and modes, HOWEVER, there are not as many scales, the scale diagrams are different, and they are all notated.

If you own Scales and Modes, you know that there is an intro page for each scale, showing the piano layout, the mode chart, and a section on chord compliance. This book has that intro page for each scale.

By the way, there are only 15 scales total in this book. I haven't checked, but probably the first 15 [or most popular 15] of Scales and Modes. It has the basic ones [Major, H.Minor/Major, Mel.Min, Pentatonic, etc] and then a few others.

Anyway. Now to the "Notated" part of it. Every mode of every scale is notated on the staff for your enjoyment / reference pleasure, and quite randomly, the very last page of the book shows every interval in every key--also notated.

Overall, this book seems to be the "B-Sides" so-to-speak of Scales and Modes; all the things left out of our favorite black book. After owning all of the Guitar Grimoire Books, this one has shown to be useful in certain situations, and also great for practicing notation, but it seems like he could have just notated every scale in "Scales and Modes" and there would be no need for this book. Of course, that would make S&M about twice as thick, so I can see where Kadmon got the idea for 2 separate books.

I'd give it 3.5 stars, but Amazon is by whole numbers, so I will go with 3 stars. If you think you'll ever want every mode of every scale notated at your fingertips, this could be for you, but otherwise, just go with S&M. :)
