From the Author
This method developed as a result of my students asking how I was able to learn songs by ear. During my weekly guitar lessons I would allow students to bring a tape or CD of a song they wanted to learn. I would listen to the song and write out the parts for my students. When they asked how I could do this, I used to tell them it comes with time. Still, students kept asking how they could learn to play by ear, so I put a system together. I've used this system with my private students for almost 10 years to date, (currently July 2005). Here's how it works in class: For part of a lesson, I'll have a music student face away from me. I'll tell them the general area where I'll be playing a note. example: First string, between the open and 4th fret. This gives the student five choices, open, 1st fret, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. I'll play a note and let the student find it. The lessons progressively advance as we go on until the student can play every note and note combination on every string. The results have been amazing! It has even worked with people who thought they were tone deaf. The Complete Guitar By Ear and Complete Bass Guitar By Ear CDs are the same lessons I teach my private students. Having seen the effectiveness of this method on all of my students I can honestly say I wish I had these CDs when I first started learning to play the guitar!

Good for recognizing notes by ear...3
I've been playing Bass for a year now, and I bought this two CD set (no book) hoping to really take my playing to the next level.

There are about 60 lessons in all, divided into Note Recognition, Finger Training, and Intervals.

The title is a bit deceptive, as the entire CD is based on a 4-string Bass, and has nothing to do with the 5th or 6th strings!

First, the good: The two CDs are good for helping you recognize different Bass notes and locating them anywhere on your Bass. You start with one string, find a note, then find another, until you can locate all the notes on that one string. Then you move onto the next string, until eventually you can find any note on any string. I find I can pick out notes more easily from songs and play along easier.(Unfortunately, this CD does not help at all with matching notes to what the guitarist is playing.)

The So-So: The Finger training exercises are really basic first-finger first-fret, second-finger second-fret exercise I didn't find useful at all, but maybe for a very beginner. The Interval training seems overly technical, and not really that useful for the playing Bassist. The author could spend more time explaining what these intervals are for! It does show you how to locate the same note on different strings I suppose. (The E on the open first string is also on the second fret at the third string, etc) but this will become quickly obvious to most Bass players who learn the notes on their Bass.

The Bad: The sound quality is good, but sometimes the sound drops out for a second or two, and some of the tracks sound like they were re-recorded over. Not a totally professional production.
