Product Description

In today's world, hit-quality recordings require more than just excellent instrumental or vocal tracks. Simply having great material isn't enough -- to create truly compelling audio, you need to understand and use the newest technologies to take your music to the next level. MIDI, an integral part of music production in the 1980s, remains a critical component of the recording process. Modern producers combine MIDI sequencing, sample and loop technologies, and high-resolution audio tracks to create dynamic, authentic, and powerful recordings. With this guide, you'll learn how to harness the potential of your studio's computer, hardware and software samplers, and other related technologies to create amazing productions. From the history and basics of samplers and MIDI, to the construction and musical use of loops, this guide will help you learn how to produce unique, compelling music that sounds great. In addition, the accompanying DVD is filled with excellent instructional demonstrations that enhance the concepts in the book. Whether you work your way through all the S.M.A.R.T. Guides or simply focus on this guide to samples, loops, and MIDI, you're on the right track to improving your artistic and technical skills, refining your production techniques, and keeping a competitive edge in today's music and audio industry.

By a drummer for drummers5
A really great book on sampling techniques. The chapters on loops heavily reference sampling. The MIDI chapters concentrate on drum sequencing. To get the most out of this book you will need to have a minimal investment in microphones and recording equipment. This book is written for those who really want to create their own sample libraries. The author emphasizes the difference between live track recording and sampling. The book is also useful to those who will use samples in their music, providing criteria to judge sample quality.

inaccurate garbage1
I would give this book a zero star rating if it was possible. As a professor of music technology, new books cross my desk constantly. This is hands-down the worst music technology book I have ever seen. It is chock-full of inaccuracies and is written in the style of a freshman term paper. The majority of the book is devoted to simple audio recording - a rehash of Gibson's other books. There is a small amount of information dealing with sample editing which is the one saving grace of the book. The MIDI information is simply WRONG. Finally, there is far-too-much filler writing about how Gibson dislikes hardware samplers but loves Macs, Steely Dan, and Toto. The book IS pretty, though.

Cover These Confusing Topics Very Well5
If you're like me, a bit confused about the techniques and technologies behind popular music or looking to expand your own musical creativity, well my friends, you found the right book for that, First: The way the author explains and demonstrates Sampling, Looping and MIDI, but also the technology to make it work, useful recommendations and proven techniques that I immediately put to the test and worked for my music.

Second : The CD that comes with this book is excellent, Audio and Video demontrations that complements your reading about the subject, all in all, keep this book nearby in your studio, it will definitely help your musical ideas and creativity.

Good Work Bill on keeping thing Simple and straight forward.
