Fast Guide to Cubase 45
I was new to Cubase so I started with the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Recording with Cubase", followed by the start up manual, then jumped to the "Fast Guide to Cubase 4". I would recommend this sequence to anyone new to Cubase. The Idiot's guide and start up manual got me through my first song, then the Fast Guide added a second layer of efficiency and detail. The Fast Guide is extremely well written--straight forward enough for the newer Cubase user, yet packed with enough detail to supplement the full-up Cubase manual as a reference for months to come.

A must have for people learning Cubase 45
This is an absolute must have for people who are learning Cubase 4. I suppose that the authors take on Cubase 5 is coming up soon, since Steinberg just released a new version.

I had experience with the old Opcode Vision software, and that was fairly intuitive and simple to use, but I have found Cubase a bit more difficult to learn. I guess that is because there are so many more options available.

I have the Cubase 4 tutorial that came with the software and the Cubase 4 for Dummies book, but both never really took me past what I had figured out already.

This book covers everything. Many times with Cubase I have gotten so frustrated trying to figure out a situation that by the time I figured it out my creative spark was gone. Take, for example, syncing Cubase with one of my MIDI instruments. Typically not a difficult thing to do with sequencing software, but there are so many options available with Cubase that you need to set up the software for inputs, outputs, etc. Not a mention of this or syncing in general in Cubase 4 for Dummies.

There is a whole chapter on this in the FAST GUIDE, and after an evening of trying to figure it out for myself (and much frustration) the FAST GUIDE had me straightened out in 6 minutes. Literally! The solution was ridiculously simple but I didn't even know that there were options for MIDI inputs and outputs. It took the FAST GUIDE to tell me so.

The book just paid for itself right there! Anyone who has been fighting their sequencing software knows exactly what I am talking about here.

Certainly not light reading in many situations, and it can sometimes confuse if you are using the Studio version versus the full scale $1,000 version of Cubase. Sometimes you don't know if a window or command is not popping up because you did something wrong, or whether the difference is that you don't have the professional version of Cubase. For the most part, however, Cubase Studio 4 users will find this book invaluable and I highly recommend it.

Amazingly thorough5
I am new to cubase and this book had me up and running in a day or so. Very thorough guides to all functions of cubase and the chapter order is great for trying out a recording and mix as you read along with the book. A great buy.
