Customer Reviews

A singer's review5
So let's look at Roz's tracks from a singer's point of view. She stumbles badly, not because they're "out of her range" but because she misses the jumps. She's actually sharp, not flat, in "Some People" (GoodBYE to blueberry pie, etc.) There are about a dozen bad notes in that song, but only a couple in "Small World," which is the most usable of the tracks. "Everything's Coming Up Roses" suffers mainly in the sustained notes. "You'll Never Get Away From Me" has one of the largest ranges of any Broadway song, so Roz has to start very low to be able to reach "Just try..." toward the end, and this hurts the early lines.

In the end, none of these tracks could have been used, and I think Roz was aware of that. I synched up the tracks with the released film, and it appears that she sang to her track for "Some People" but not for the others, since they don't match her onscreen performance at all. Maybe she saw the dailies for "Some People" and then agreed to sing to Lisa Kirk's tracks for the rest of filming (unlike Natalie Wood, who insisted on doing all the filming of West Side Story to her own tracks).

It's too bad that they didn't try to cobble together usable tracks from multiple takes, since her performances have much more intensity and emotional power than Lisa Kirk's, I think. It is surprising that her tracks were recorded with the full WB orchestra (not just a rehearsal pianist like Natalie Wood's WSS tracks). Maybe because of her "Wonderful Town" recording, they went into the project thinking she could do it and only realized the truth after the recording session. Otherwise, why go through all the hassle and expense of a full orchestral session if you have no intention of using the tracks?

Terrible recording of wonderful music2
I'm by no means an experienced sound technician, but I can tell when something is wrong. The low rating of this CD is not based off of the beautiful, catchy tunes. I have based the 2 stars off of the fact that this is a terrible recording. When the CD is played in my car I have to turn the volume all the way up because it it muffled, almost as if listening from another room.

The bad recording quality makes it difficult to get a true appraisal of the vocalists or the instrumentals. I will say that I LOVE the music from this show, so when I saw this CD in a bargain bin, I snatched it up. It looks like I am going to have to spend the money to get a "real" copy of the musical so that I can sing along.

I can vouch for the quality of the Bette Middler version, although she's not my favorite singer, she does a fantastic job as Mamma Rose, and the recording quality is much better. I have not listened to the Angela Lansbury version yet.

Sondheim3
As usual with Sondheim creations (for this one he 'only' wrote the lyrics), it takes some time before you fully appreciate it. At first i was disappointed but now it like it!
