Great recording and piano concerto
I bought this CD "in preparation" for hearing Jean Thibaudet play Khachaturian's Piano Concerto with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. And it took only a few listens to realize that I had discovered one of the more inventive and colorful concertos in all of music. I almost felt like a teenager again in playing it for the umpteenth time. I love so many aspects of it, including the obvious influences of Borodin, Prokofiev, and (yes I do hear) Gershwin. The music not only sounds distinctly Russian, but at times hints at crossing into the Far East.
As for the second movement, I would hope that a listener could empathize with the beauty, sadness, and sense of longing that it conveys. For me this movement is to music what a famous (albeit long) quote is to the progress and wisdom of mankind.
Finally, I also very much enjoyed the Sonatina and Toccata pieces that round out the CD. It leaves me wondering why until now the name "Aram Khachaturian" was barely recognizable to me. I've heard "Rhapsody In Blue" dozens of times on the radio, but not once any of the remarkable pieces on this cd.
On a side note, hearing Jean Thibaudet and the LA Phil play this concerto made it one of the more memorable performances in my recollection. I sensed in the audience feelings of both exhiliration and deep gratitude. Unlike the Lang Lang concert last month, this one didn't need a fireworks show at the end.
A 30+ min Concerto shrunk to less than 8 minutes ?!?!?!
I went to the Hollywood Bowl last night and watched "Thibaudet Plays Khachaturian". To say it was amazing is not enough. Espcially for me that I have never heard Khachaturian. So this morming I logged into Amazon to buy the CD. Saw this CD that got a couple of 5 star reviews, so I downloaded it. I had seen that the 3 movements were a few minutes long, but that's an error I figured. No error, that's the lenght. I'm not a classical expert, but for me this is a ripp off. I had to then purchase another CD with the real deal. Why would they sell it like this??
Just avoid this CD and buy another one.
Lost Piano Concerto
Years ago I had an 8-track that was supposed to be the Pines of Rome. Instead it was a beautiful piano concerto. I have looked for it for a very long time. Then I heard it again on a PBS radio station and found it's name and composer: Khachaturian's Piano Concerto in D-Flat. This recording is just wonderful and I play it nearly every day.Khachaturian: Piano Concerto in D flat, Sonatina; Toccata
