Not for the average reader
Erickson's book will be tough sledding for the average reader. As a "Listener's Guide" it is geared to musicians quite familiar with musical analysis. O yes, the glued binding in my 1967 edition is more or less a failure. Erickson does some nice things with his discussions on Bach's Art of Fugue, so you can see the intellectual and musical level of this book. It's a dry lecture here, but if you want an overview of music theory from Okeghem to Webern, this may be your cup of tea. I gave it 3 stars because I'm just barely keeping it in my library. Others may think it's a 5-star wonder and more power to them!
