It even records student results so you can monitor their progress over time. Auralia is perfect for schools, colleges, universities and anyone learning or teaching an instrument. Matthew Haworth, Egglescliffe School: "The Sibelius suite of educational software has revolutionised my music teaching. In particular Auralia has made ear training much more accessible for students and has enabled me to set out-of-class activities that I was previously unable to do. I use Auralia with whole classes via an interactive whiteboard and set groups of pupils individual tasks. Individual pupils can keep detailed personalised records of their progress. In my school Auralia transformed ear training from being a time consuming activity with whole classes to a much more individualised learning experience that is made accessible and enjoyable. Auralia has hundreds of exercises from beginner to advanced levels, covering 26 topics (plus 15 new ones in Auralia 3) such as: Identify & sing intervals, and notes from chords, Melodic and rhythmic dictation, Identify cadences, Recognize and correct poor tuning, Sing upper or lower part of a two-part phrase, Write down chord progressions. The tests are designed for classical, jazz and rock/pop students, with special exercises on jazz/contemporary scales, chords and progressions.

Interactive testing

Auralia has hundreds of exercises from beginner to advanced levels, covering 26 topics (plus 15 new ones in Auralia 3) such as:

  • Identify and sing intervals, and notes from chords
  • Melodic and rhythmic dictation
  • Identify cadences
  • Recognize and correct poor tuning
  • Sing upper or lower part of a two-part phrase
  • Write down chord progressions
The tests are designed for classical, jazz, and rock/pop students, with special exercises on jazz/contemporary scales, chords, and progressions.

Select, play, or sing
Some tests in Auralia have multiple-choice questions; others let you answer by clicking an on-screen piano keyboard, playing on a MIDI keyboard; Auralia even lets you sing into a microphone!

Advance quickly
Auralia has graded levels, so students can progress to more advanced exercises as they improve.

When a student has mastered a topic at a particular level and is achieving good test marks, 'The Professor' will automatically move them up to the next level. You can even create your own tests to suit your students' requirements.

Track student progress
Auralia records all your results, for you to view on screen or print out.

You can print student and class results in any of 25 useful reports, and marks are compiled over time so you can monitor students' progress from week to week.

If you use a network, all student results are stored in a single central database, whichever computer they work on.

Complete reference
If you get stuck, or need some extra help, Auralia includes detailed on-screen reference information, with helpful music examples to listen to.

Auralia 3.0 Student Edition Feedback3
Even though I downloaded the trial version first before I purchased the Auralia Student Edition 3.0, I still wasn't well aware of the full extent as to how useful and effective the software performs/is.

I was not completely satisfied with the product due to the following reasons:

1. Auralia is helpful for musicians as a supplemental tool, but not effective in teaching music hearing to novices.

2. The software contains topics which require singing into a microphone (for pitch exercises), and tapping on keyboard (for rhythm exercises). For singing into a microphone, the Auralia system doesn't take-in the pitches accurately sometimes. Also, there is a short time delay in tapping the rhythms via keyboard or clicking the mouse.

Overall, I still think Auralia is a great software, it's just that personally I was disappointed in its functions and performance.

Good, helpful5
I like the exercises and drills, they're helpful.

This is good for those who already have a basic knowledge of Music Theory though. I would suggest The Complete Idiot's Guide to Music Theory, 2nd Edition (The Complete Idiot's Guide) and if you like softwares, how about Music Ace Deluxe, that one's fun for kids to adults. There's a trial version to see if it's compatible with you. This one has a trial version too, I'd suggest to check that too.

I do feel this should be cheaper, it's helpful but it has competition.

Outstanding learning aid5
As a student with a lot of desire and little natural talent, I have found this software to be a great tool in learning enough music to play guitar. My biggest criticisms are that the guitar sounds don't really sound like a guitar, and that even the easiest rhythm lessons are too complex (my teacher agrees with me on this). All in all, a good product.
