Editorial Reviews

Album Description
One of the most critically acclaimed of Modern Rock bands, Built To Spill returns with its long-awaited album, the first in five years. Putting aside extensive overdubs and an atmosphere sweep, You in Reverse captures the organic, loose, impromptu feel of the band's jams. Led by influential alt-rock hero Doug Martsch and sprouting new influences and a fresh feel, Built To Spill drives ahead with You in Reverse.

It took Doug Martsch five years to complete this album so what's another two minutes? That's precisely how long it takes to sit through a nail-biting instrumental intro before the singer chimes in and you realize that, whew!, he still has it. The quirky, Idaho-born indie-rock group's first album since 2001's Ancient Melodies of the Future, is positively radiant. The meandering melodies have been reigned in but the songs still don't feel like they're rushing to get anywhere, even on the double-paced "Conventional Wisdom." On tracks such as "Liar" and "The Wait" the spacey guitar solos are tempered by sweet touches of slide guitar and a back porch rhythm. Meanwhile, there's a definite Neil Young influence creeping through "Wherever You Go" and "Gone," which makes the band that was weird enough to inspire Modest Mouse weirder than ever. --Aidin Vaziri

These guys are really good songwriters. I was enjoying the melodies and loved the sound of the lead singers voice. Call me crazy, but he sounds like Bob Welch a little bit, doesn't he? Bob Welch is an old pop rock musician from the 70's, and he reminds me of the singer on this Built to Spill album. He was also a part of the rock band Fleetwood Mac (the older version of the band that most people wouldn't recognize).

It's no KEEP IT LIKE A SECRET5
but it's definitely better than alot of people seem to think. I would say its one of their best, better than Ancient Melodies.

Great mix of Neil Young-esque guitar rock and slightly psychedelic indie pop. I am shocked and how well this records has grown in the last year and just great catchy 3/4 of this album is. I have some of these songs stuck in my head for weeks at a time.

Can't wait for another new LP.

Where are the melodies?3
If you honestly think this is their best album, the only thing I can say is you clearly have never listened to "Perfect From Now On" or "Keep it Like a Secret". Or if you have you weren't listening close enough. The melodies on this album are nowhere near the blissful pure-pop the earlier albums. There a few standouts (the first 3 songs, Conventional Wisdom, and the last 2 songs) but it is not a front-to-back masterpiece. I'm sorry, the songs are just not as strong, simple and plain. Of course it is still great and better than 99.5% of what most other indie-rock bands put out.
