Customer Reviews

Pros and cons4
This product had the potential to really be perfect for me. I use Cubase for small venue and home recording. It has some outstanding features and some disappointments. I've been using Cubase SX and skipped SX3 waiting for SX4. Going to Steinberg's site there was a comparision chart to show the differences between Cubase SX and Cubase Studio 4. I have heartburn with the fact that Cubase Studio 4 has some key features missing not noted on the comparison chart, such as the lack an input channel on the mixer page. This is critical because it allows you to print eq and effects permantly during the recording, thus conserving CPU power. Since they have stripped this feature I risk freezes and latency if I load too many plugins and eq (and it does not take much). Thanks a lot Steinberg!
Also Cubase SX4 and Studio no longer support Direct X plugins. All of my old SX projects that have those type plug-ins are crippled when I load them on CB S 4. Once again thanks. It would have been nice to note this on their site "before" I purchased. I may have bought it any way, but at least I would have had a choice, besides for $400 they should have left this key feature on. Setting the input channels are also now more confusing, however you can eventually figure it out.As with all brands of software such as this it requires an annoying dongle to be plugged in your USB 2 port at all times for CB to work.

On the plus side, CB S 4 has really good sounding plug-ins and great possibilities. For the money it is light years advanced from old school recording just 10 years ago.

Note: I'm using a Dell 1.8ghz laptop with 1gb ram along with the presonus firepod (great unit). If you are exploring computer based recording, you must be somewhat computer savy, because there is a significant learning curve. Also your computer has to be fine tuned and up to snuff at all times. It is worth it once you tackle the curve!
Good luck!
