My Eclectic Clarinet Favorites in No Particular Order
By an Amazon.com customer
Black DogBlack Dog by Robert Spring
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $12.35
Excellent CD by Robert Spring! Influences for McAllister's compositions "Black Dog" and "X" are Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains. Came off WONDERFULLY. Definitely a new favorite of mine.
This Is Not a ClarinetThis Is Not a Clarinet by Evan Ziporyn
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $6.59
Along w/ Michael Lowenstern, this guy is one of the best Bass Clar. players I've heard. Lots of extended techniques...VERY COOL CD!
American Contemporary ClarinetAmerican Contemporary Clarinet by David Robertson
Buy used from: $13.00
Got this CD for Reich's NY Counterpoint, but the whole CD is excellent. Very impressed by the Adams, Carter, etc. Very good CD!!!
20th Century Music For Unaccompanied Clarinet20th Century Music For Unaccompanied Clarinet
Buy new: $10.98 / Used from: $7.37
Excellent CD covering some of the 20th century solo clarinet music making its way into the standard repitoire. Played VERY well. I am acquainted with extended techniques, and it's great on this CD!
Milhaud: Chamber Musi for Violin, Clarinet and PianoMilhaud: Chamber Musi for Violin, Clarinet and Piano
Excellent CD. I've played his Suite for Clarinet Violin and Piano, and it is one of my favorite pieces in the clarinet repitoire. Excellent performance by Trio Bellerive!
Rossini: Overtures; Introduction, Theme and VariationsRossini: Overtures; Introduction, Theme and Variations
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $5.00
Introduction, Theme & Variations is EXCELLENT. Charlie Neidich plays the heck out of that piece! This is the best recording of that piece you're going to find...and it's cheap too!
The Complete Clarinet Music, Vol.2The Complete Clarinet Music, Vol.2
Nobody plays Weber quite like Jon Manasse (in a good way). His tone is perfect for playing Weber. Though his dynamic contrast is a little lacking, I still suggest this recording above any other.
Mitchell Lurie: ClarinetMitchell Lurie: Clarinet
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $12.13
Great CD. Time Pieces is fantastic! Other pieces are quite good as well. Recording quality a bit dodgy, but the playing is excellent. I definitely reccomend this CD; especially for the Muczynski.
SpasmSpasm by Michael Lowenstern
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $5.80
An excellent (and modern) CD from one of the best bass clarinetists alive today. Even if you don't like modern music, you can still appreciate how much talent it takes to play this music.
1985 - Lowenstern1985 - Lowenstern
More great stuff from bass clarinet god, Michael Lowenstern. Need I say more?
Lutoslawski: Dance Preludes, Nielsen: Concerto for Clarinet & OrchestraLutoslawski: Dance Preludes, Nielsen: Concerto for Clarinet & Orchestra by Witold Lutoslawski
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $15.28
A decent CD from Richard Stoltzman. The Lutoslawski is good and the Nielsen is OK. Overall, I am not a big fan of Stoltzman for these reasons: Crappy sound, too much vibrato, and sloppy articluation.
American SpiritAmerican Spirit
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $10.98
This CD is EXCELLENT! Sean covers some of the lesser known American works and plays them all FANTASTICALLY! My favorites are the Martino, Mandat, and Bernstein (I like modern if you haven't noticed).
Stravinski: L'Histoire du soldat; Bartók: ContrastesStravinski: L'Histoire du soldat; Bartók: Contrastes
Buy used from: $9.50
I've played most of the pieces and know how hard they are. All I have for this CD are praises, EXCEPT that Walter took Stravinsky's Three Pieces too fast. Other than that, it's damn near flawless!
Carnegie Hall Jazz ConcertCarnegie Hall Jazz Concert by Benny Goodman
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $6.99
If you like, or play clarinet, you should have this album. Benny Goodman was lucky enough to perform the FIRST jazz concert at Carnegie Hall and here it is! It is EXCELLENT! Best "Sing Sing Sing" Solo
Ivey-DiveyIvey-Divey by Don Byron
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $4.00
Don Byron is a jazz clarinet GOD. The man is a brilliant composer, soloist, and has the best sound of any jazz clarinetist I've heard. This is a tribute album to Lester Young. An Excellent CD!
Tuskegee ExperimentsTuskegee Experiments by Don Byron
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $6.90
Tuskeegee experiments is more of a "straight-ahead" jazz CD. Take "straight-ahead" with a grain of salt b/c nothing Don Byron does is really "straight-ahead." It's his own playing, but it's VERY good!
A Fine Line: Arias and LiederA Fine Line: Arias and Lieder by Don Byron
Buy used from: $0.01
This is probably my favorite. Covers everything from Leonard Bernstein to Henry Mancini to Stevie Wonder. Very eloquent CD. One of my all-time favorites!
Plays the Music of Mickey KatzPlays the Music of Mickey Katz by Don Byron
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $3.22
Don Byron's tribute to Mickey Katz; the Yiddish comic and klezmer clarinetist. A very good album. Don Byron's klezmer chops are nothing less than mind-blowing!
Out to LunchOut to Lunch by Eric Dolphy
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.49
What can I say. Eric Dolphy is a master jazz bass clarinetist. Buy this only if you dig Avant-Garde jazz because it will sound very weird to "virgin" ears. This is an excellent album!
Ted Nash: Sidewalk MeetingTed Nash: Sidewalk Meeting
Buy used from: $4.99
I saw Ted Nash and his group Odeon at the Villiage Vanguard in NYC. I bought this CD and haven't stopped listening to it. Naturally, Favorite track is the JAZZ cover of Debussy's Premiere Rhapsody.
Property Of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band XXLProperty Of Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band XXL by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $10.75
Eddie Daniels lays down some HOT clarinet solos on a few of the tracks. I love this band. Gordon Goodwin writes some awesome stuff, but also writes some crap too. Buy this if you like jazz clarinet!
Swingin' for the FencesSwingin' for the Fences by Goodwin's Big Phat Band
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $3.94
See above.
Klezperanto! Re-Grooves KlezmerKlezperanto! Re-Grooves Klezmer by Various Artists
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.41
Klezmer is fused w/ zydeco, latin, and more in this album. It is an excellent CD. ESPECIALLY their klezmer cover of A Night in Tunisia. Very high energy. You won't be disappointed at all.
The Twelve TribesThe Twelve Tribes by David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness
Buy used from: $11.98
David Krakauer is by far one of the most talented klezmer clarinet players out there. It is a great album, but the track that stands out to me is Tribe #13 written by Krakauer himself. It's THE BEST!
Dancing in the AislesDancing in the Aisles by Klezmer Conservatory Band
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $8.48
A very good CD w/ some EXCELLENT clarinet features played by Ilene Stahl. Anything by the KCB is great to have if you like klezmer at all
