Space Music - a stellar sequence of superlative sonics of star systems

Holst: The Planets / R. Strauss: Also Sprach ZarathustraHolst: The Planets / R. Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.97
Although this list is mostly about electronic music, I'm going to begin it with some classical music that is easily enjoyable on the first listen. Each of the planets is given a unique musical composition except Pluto, which hadn't been discovered yet in Holst's time. This CD also has a composition by Richard Strauss that was used in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey."
Macula TransferMacula Transfer by Edgar Froese
Buy used from: $62.98
This CD is a good place to start your space music collection. I imagine adventurous voyages as space craft shuttle from galaxy to galaxy. The tracks are named after various airplane flights that Edgar Froese traveled on.
MirageMirage by Klaus Schulze
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $11.44
With this music I imagine spacecraft voyages in far corners of the universe with more mystery and danger than elicited in Macula Transfer by Froese. Sometimes it sounds as though one is descending into a black hole in slow motion (1st track), other times it sounds like the magical beauty of pulsars or quasars (2nd track), and other times the music is gorgeous, sublime, and meditative (track 3).
MoondawnMoondawn by Klaus Schulze
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $12.05
This interesting collection of great space music gives me the impression of spacecraft exploring a variety of spacescapes, moonscapes, and seascapes.
GalaxiesGalaxies by Kevin Braheny
Buy used from: $3.85
Joyful and adventurous space music to cure any earthly blues! This music was used in planetariums. If you're new to space music, this should be one of your first purchases. And if you enjoy Galaxies, try Braheny's CD "THE WAY HOME," which has relaxing space music of luminous beauty and serenity.
PhaedraPhaedra by Tangerine Dream
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.54
An absolute masterpiece of electronic music. The standard by which great electronic music should be critiqued.
RubyconRubycon by Tangerine Dream
Buy new: $8.94 / Used from: $4.29
Another masterpiece of electronic music with a slightly darker mood than Phaedra above.
FacesFaces by Paul Hartzog
Buy used from: $34.05
Electronic music with heart and soul, brimming with emotion and exoticism. Hartzog’s imaginative use of contrasting a variety of captivating sounds to paint vivid musical colors should be appealing and meaningful to a broad range of listeners.
The Stargazer's JourneyThe Stargazer's Journey by Jonn Serrie
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $11.25
Soothing space music - imagine lying on your back on soft, summer grass and falling asleep while enjoying the majestic, star filled night sky above. I also recommend AND THE STARS GO WITH YOU by Serrie; I think the intricate sculptures in sound and beautiful lines of music seem to capture the feeling of the vastness and infinite beauty of outer space. Very relaxing music.
Planetary Chronicles, Vol. 1Planetary Chronicles, Vol. 1 by Jonn Serrie
Buy used from: $10.76
Do try this at home: listen to this music while gazing through your telescope into the heavens, and experience space with sight and sound. There is also a VOLUME 2 in this series (sold separately) which I also highly recommend. Both volume 1 and 2 contain great planetarium type music.
Fourth UniverseFourth Universe by Geodesium
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $11.15
Paintings in sound that seem almost as vivid as looking at space with the Hubble telescope! If you enjoy this CD, try WEST OF THE GALAXY by Geodesium (see #34 below), which also has great planetarium type music.
Blue CosmosBlue Cosmos
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $36.12
Music that is relaxing and captivating at the same time, with the possible exception of track one, which is sparsely sprinkled with a mysterious vocal chant that might not appeal to everyone. Listen to sound samples if available.
TimewindTimewind by Klaus Schulze
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $28.47
A masterpiece that won acclaim from both classical and electronic music experts...but don't let that scare you off :) This double CD set is very "user friendly." The flow of music is flawless and enchanting. If you want a rougher edge in your space music then try CLUSTER 71 (see #28 below).
ZeitZeit by Tangerine Dream
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.25
Music full of mystery. If an alien "Alpha Centauri Quartet" is playing a concert somewhere 4.2 light years away, perhaps the music might sound something like the music of this CD.
AquaAqua by Edgar Froese
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $8.94
To me, this music suggests mystical water kingdoms and soaring aircraft. The aircraft sound effects seemed out of place on this CD when I first listened to it, but then I imagined the CD as a celebration of the four archaic elements (water, air, fire, and earth) which made sense to me. I also recommend "RAINBOW DOME MUSICK" by Steve Hillage for space music with cool sound effects of water.
LifeformsLifeforms by The Future Sound of London
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $3.25
And speaking of water, is there life on other planets? YES! And this double CD set is the most interesting artistic interpretation of the sounds of life and biology that I've ever heard! If only biology classes in High School were this fun!
Lifeforms (Remixes)Lifeforms (Remixes) by The Future Sound of London
Buy used from: $1.21
I usually prefer space music that has a subtle beat (or none at all), but this CD is a remarkable exception with a strong beat. The nature sound effects are exciting and very enjoyable, especially on track one which sounds like the middle of an alien rain forest filled with weird creatures! The little sprinkling of vocals enhances the mystery of the sonic adventure. 39 minutes long.
Ambient 4: On LandAmbient 4: On Land by Brian Eno
Buy used from: $15.49
Great ambient music that seems to paint with sound an alien landscape rich with lifeforms. For additional organic, electronic, space music I recommend "MEDITATION/SKY MUSIC-MOUNTAIN MUSIC" by Eberhard Schoener, which in my imagination sounds like mysterious oceans and strange deserts on far distant planets.
BestiaryBestiary by Robert Rich
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $5.50
Great organic electronica that sounds like life on far distant planets. It has vocals on track eight but this doesn't detract from the mysterious atmosphere of the music. I suggest you put all the discs mentioned in #16 through #20 in your CD player and enjoy an awesome musical celebration of life!
Numena/GeometryNumena/Geometry by Robert Rich
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $11.52
Music that suggests to me the richness of life, the golden ratio, and other wonderful phenomena of nature and the universe. Numena is more "organic" sounding than Geometry. In my opinion, both discs "fit" with a space music theme, although they also "fit" with other musical styles as well.
IrrlichtIrrlicht by Klaus Schulze
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $14.86
A critically acclaimed album from 1972 and the beginning of Klaus Schulze's amazing solo career in electronic music. For a great example of Schulze's style a decade later (1988), try his album EN=TRANCE, a tremendously satisfying serving of electronic space music!
XX by Klaus Schulze
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $29.18
An amazing musical tribute to various writers of literature and music (and also mad King Ludwig of Bavaria who helped Richard Wagner). The track "Friedemann Bach" sounds to me like a far distant civilization in outer space somehow picking up distorted "sound waves" from a classical music concert on our planet earth.
Like a Duck to WaterLike a Duck to Water by Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co.
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $12.18
If there's life on far distant planets, are there also carnivals, cotton candy, and clowns? If so, perhaps the carnival music sounds something like the 7th track on this CD, an irresistable charmer that ends much too soon after a minute and a half. I also recommend Mother Mallard's CD "1970-1973" and Terry Riley's "A RAINBOW IN CURVED AIR" for great electronic compositions.
The Continuing Story of Counterpoint, Parts 1-4 + 8 (Complete)The Continuing Story of Counterpoint, Parts 1-4 + 8 (Complete) by David Borden's Mother Mallard
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $9.00
I recommend all 3 CDs of this series. In my imagination I hear the busy, energetic, rhythms of the Universe set to music (this is not music to fall asleep with!) If you like this series but want to listen to something less "busy", try DEPARTURE FROM THE NORTHERN WASTELAND by Hoenig (see #25 below). If you want to hear classical counterpoint, I recommend Bach's HARPSICHORD CONCERTOS (see #35).
Departure from the Northern WastelandDeparture from the Northern Wasteland by Michael Hoenig
Buy new: $15.45 / Used from: $9.99
I like to listen to this CD when I'm in the mood for intelligent, sophisticated, electronic music that's not as "busy" as the CONTINUING STORY OF COUNTERPOINT CDs above. There are some bizarre vocals on track three but they don't last too long and don't detract from the enjoyability of the CD.
CreationCreation
In my opinion, tracks 1 and 7 have a spiritual feeling and suggest creation and joy. Tracks 2 and 5 have a beat (5 has a faster pace). Tracks 3 and 4 have piano music (3 reminds me of Satie's GYMNOPEDIES - very heavenly sounding). The last couple minutes of track 4 does not sound like space music. Track 6 is pleasant piano music with a beat, but does not sound like space music to me.
The Jupiter MenaceThe Jupiter Menace
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $46.71
Doomsday!...are you prepared? (cf. D&C 38:30)
Cluster 71Cluster 71 by Cluster
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $41.05
On this CD, in my imagination, I hear the sounds of supernovas and buzzing electrons. I also hear the organization and disorganization of natural and mysterious phenomena on macro and micro scales. The music has a rougher edge than the other CDs on the list.
SpiralSpiral by Vangelis
Buy used from: $8.00
A wonderful treasure of bold and sparkling electronic music (with a beat) from Vangelis before he settled into his "melodic style". The abstract vocals on track 2 are interesting. I also recommend BEAUBOURG by Vangelis (not shown) which is kind of chaotic, but in a very entertaining and "space sound effects" way. Don't expect to hear music like "Chariots of Fire" or you'll be very disappointed!
TranceferTrancefer by Klaus Schulze
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $13.04
For space music with a beat I recommend TRANCEFER and MIDITERRANEAN PADS by Klaus Schulze and TANGRAM by Tangerine Dream. (Sold separately and only Trancefer is shown). Miditerranean Pads has a soothing beat with a deep assuring bass. I think Tangram is a good way to get into space music if you're finding it hard to break free from a diet of pop/rock music. Trancefer is the best of the three.
Apollo: Atmospheres & SoundtracksApollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks by Brian Eno
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.88
A shining example of great ambient music, although some tracks, like #8, seem a bit out of place for a space music CD. Used for the soundtrack of a documentary of the Apollo space mission.
The Equatorial StarsThe Equatorial Stars by Fripp & Eno
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $9.30
For me, the music of guitars and pianos do not generally conjure up images of outer space. However, there are exceptions. This CD, for example, has some of the best guitar music that sounds like outer space, in my opinion. (For great piano space music, see CREATION by Braden McDonald - #26).
Immersion: TwoImmersion: Two by Steve Roach
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $11.75
This CD contains one track of a continuous unfolding of music that suggests to my ears the immeasurable immensity of space. The variety of sounds is limited but interesting enough to keep my attention. I recommend IMMERSION:ONE with reservation; it contains a constant stream of sound with very little variety and might not appeal to all listeners.
West of the GalaxyWest of the Galaxy by Geodesium
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $8.94
Tracks 1, 4, 6 and 9 are relaxing. In my imagination #2 captures the exciting mood of watching a night sky ablaze with stars, comets, and meteor showers. #3 sounds magical to me. #5 has some great feel-good music. #7 sounds peaceful. #8 sounds dramatic, like the anticipation of beginning a fantastic space voyage.
Complete Harpsichord ConcertosComplete Harpsichord Concertos by Bach
Buy new: $23.98 / Used from: $10.74
A "WILDCARD" on the list. Some "space sounding" music from the last place you'd expect...eighteenth century Baroque by Johann Sebastian Bach. I imagine the harpsichord notes are mysterious sounds from space craft, quasars, and other phenomena in outer space. This "space sound" isn't in all of Bach's harpsichord concertos, but I hear it in many of the fast paced ones.
György Ligeti: Concertos for Cello / Violin / Piano - Pierre Boulez / Ensemble InterContemporainGyörgy Ligeti: Concertos for Cello / Violin / Piano - Pierre Boulez / Ensemble InterContemporain by Pierre-Laurent Aimard
Buy used from: $5.93
A "WILDER CARD." Modern classical music for adventurous lovers of music. It sounds like space music to me, why not open your ears and give it a listen? Warning: Don't let tracks 1, 4 or 5 scare you away, the good stuff that sounds like space music, in my opinion, is on tracks 2-3 and 6-12. (I think all modern classical music should come with a warning label, don't you? :)
Pierre Boulez: Répons / Dialogue de l'Ombre Double (20/21 series)Pierre Boulez: Répons / Dialogue de l'Ombre Double (20/21 series) by Vincent Bauer
Buy used from: $11.96
The "WILDEST CARD." This modern classical music sounds like space music to me, why not give it a try yourself? Warning: don't let the first track scare you off, I recommend you listen to tracks 2-10 for music that sounds like space music. The other half of the CD contains tracks (11-23) that don't sound like space music but, in my opinion, do contain some great modern classical music.
Futures: 50 Years in Space: The Challenge of the StarsFutures: 50 Years in Space: The Challenge of the Stars by David A. Hardy
Buy used from: $1.33
I highly recommend this book to browse while listening to space music. This book has actual pictures of space, but also has wonderful artist's impressions of space in beautiful, sometimes fanciful, paintings. It has page after page of gorgeous space images. The next best thing to a telescope!
The Universe and BeyondThe Universe and Beyond by Terence Dickinson
Buy new: $23.36 / Used from: $1.00
Another great book to browse while listening to space music. This book has both actual pictures of space and paintings of artist's impressions of space. Not as many fanciful paintings as the book above. The focus is more on actual images from space. Just as enjoyable as "Futures".
Manhattan Research, Inc.Manhattan Research, Inc.
Buy new: $31.98 / Used from: $19.95
Just for silliness (to counter-balance the serious music listed above), try this fun showcase of commercials and early electronica with a retro 1950's/1960's style. Still feeling silly? Try THE OUT SOUND FROM WAY IN! by Perrey and Kingsley. For something bizarre, try THE ART OF THE THEREMIN by Clara Rockmore.
