![]() | Tantra Lounge, Vol. 4 by Various Artists
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $12.00 Here's the album that really opened my eyes to the world of lounge and chillout music. There are currently 5 in the Tantra Lounge series, but they struck gold with the 4th: an unparalleled diverse collection of some of the most beautiful, haunting, grooving downtempo beats and melodies to grace the genre, ending with the best of all, the oft-remixed and endlessly talented Bombay Dub Orchestra.

![]() | The Richest Man In Babylon by Thievery Corporation
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.85 One of the biggest names in the lounge movement, this dynamic D.C. DJ duo received much attention off the Garden State Soundtrack with Lebanese Blonde. This album is their most easily-accessable, the album I would recommend to anyone just getting into Thievery Corp. It covers a variety of world sounds, but mostly it's all about the blending of addictive beats with romping bass and diverse vocals.

![]() | Simple Things by Zero 7
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.71 Another of the Garden State success stories was Zero 7, and this album is accredited as one of the breakthrough albums in the lounge genre. One can't help but compare this British duo with French duo Air, but I like to think that Zero 7 improved upon the somewhat more experimental and chaotic Air sound, and that's why it makes my list. That and it's really, really good.

![]() | Dummy by Portishead
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.40 No collection that includes the words Trip-Hop would be complete without Portishead. While other Trip-Hop kingpins such as Massive Attack and Tricky are far too hot/cold for the casual listener or someone just getting into the genre, Portishead's Dummy is much more accessable. If you like it, definitely expand to Massive Attack's Mezzanine and Sneaker Pimps' Becoming X, but try Dummy first.

![]() | The Understanding by Röyksopp
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.95 One of the more poppie and electronic bands of the genre, Royksopp has the ability to impart mood and dance music in the same songs, no small feat. Their 2nd album is more refined than their debut, and therefore a lot easier to get into, with quick beats and catchy riffs that are sure to propell them into the spotlight as they grow in popularity. Jump on the bandwagon before it really takes off!

![]() | The Mating Game by Bitter:Sweet
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.64 This quirky little pop band has everything you'd want: dreamy vocals, luscious beats, and more than a dash of sultry sexiness in every track. They may be a bit on the lighter side, but they are one of those bands you could play for practically anyone and get a favorable reaction. If you like this album, check out the ridiculously great remix that Thievery Corporation does on The Remix Game album.

![]() | Felt Mountain by Goldfrapp
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.74 A slight warning for this album: it's very experimental, very avant-garde, but also very enjoyable in every sense. Goldfrapp would go on to sound a lot more like Madonna or Kylie in her later albums, but here she sounds like the singer who collaborated with Tricky in the 90s, only more alive, more inventive. Fans of Portishead and Moulin Rouge will undoubtedly love this album.

![]() | Never, Never, Land by UNKLE
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.43 Not UNKLE's best known album, but certainly this UK electronic guru's finest in my humble opinion. UNKLE has contributed with a host of other talented artists in the downtempo scene, and there's a reason they all come to him: he's got that golden touch. And while we're talking about those other artists, check out DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, Ian Brown's Music of the Spheres, and Radiohead's Kid A.
|
![]() | The Magic Dragon by Caia
Buy used from: $5.50 Here's one I can almost guarantee you've never heard of. Quietly debuting from Japan, with no signs of a second album in the works, Caia nevertheless wows and succeeds with this sweet and simple album. While it's almost completely unknown, I was fortunate to stumble upon Caia as one of the first bands in the world lounge genre that I listened to, and they hold a special place on my list.

![]() | Bombay Dub Orchestra by Bombay Dub Orchestra
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $7.99 There is no way I would leave this gem of an album off my list. Assuming you listen to Tantra Lounge 4 as well, you'll recognize Beauty and the East, the best track on the album, but only one of many many brilliantly blended East-meets-West tracks that inspire and relax in equal measure. The duo also worked with Bjork and VAST, both worth a listen if interested in expanding your sound.
