By an Amazon.com customer
Chicka Chicka Boom BoomChicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
An all-time favorite. This is a fantastic book, and we love it so much we bought the Scholastic DVD that goes along with it (great, great singing and animation). If you're a real fan of this one, also try Chicka Chicka 123.
Jump Up!Jump Up! by Dan Zanes
Buy used from: $1.85
If you love books with songs and rhythm, and you haven't heard Dan Zanes, you're in for a treat. He makes kids music adults can love. This is one of his best songs set to the page, with great illustrations by Mr. Saaf. If you enjoy this book, also check out "Hello Hello" (though I find it a little difficult to sing), and also his DVD Concert performance. All of his kids CDs are worth having.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?: 40th Anniversary Edition (Brown Bear and Friends)Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?: 40th Anniversary Edition (Brown Bear and Friends) by Bill Martin Jr.
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $1.99
Another classic. Great for little kids learning common animals, and the pictures/art by Eric Carle are some of his best--simple, bright illustrations that fill the entire page. If you like this one, also get his Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? (About zoo animals) and Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? (About Endangered Animals), and the new Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?
This Jazz ManThis Jazz Man by Karen Ehrhardt
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $2.48
A new book--sung to the song "This Old Man." Bright illustrations, each of a famous jazz musican or artist. "This Jazz Man, he plays two, He makes music with his shoes, with a Tap-tap! Shuffle-slap! Give the man a hand, This jazz man stomps with the band." Have fun finding the mouse on each page, and enjoy the biography section at the end!
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly (Caldecott Honor Book)There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly (Caldecott Honor Book) by Simms Taback
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $1.13
Classic! The art by Simms Taback is fantastic, and the pages have cut-out sections showing previous animals. Each page is a delight of details and color. This book also has a Scholastic DVD animated version, with the song sung by Cindi Lauper, of all people!
Way Up High in a Tall Green TreeWay Up High in a Tall Green Tree by Jan Peck
Buy new: $14.04 / Used from: $7.07
This is a sweet book, and I like that the animals shown are a little unusual (ocelots, kinkajous, sloths, etc.). The pictures are bright and bold, and the text is easy to sing. This is a great book for being a little silly, but calm enough to be a bedtime book. Also, Jan Peck has two other books based on the same rhythm: Way Far Away on a Jungle Safari and Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea.
I Love You! A Bushel & A PeckI Love You! A Bushel & A Peck by Frank Loesser
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $0.25
This is such a cute book! My sons love this song because it's on a Dan Zanes album. They're transfixed by the book...two ducks courting each other on a farm with cows, chickens, and pigs. The artwork is by Rosemary Wells, of Noisy Nora fame. It's just adorable, and so fun!
If You're Happy and You Know It!If You're Happy and You Know It! by Jan Ormerod
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.01
Cute, cute, cute. The illustrations are bright and bubbly, the animal noises are a blast to act out, and it has a very simple message about the importance of being yourself when you're happy. If you like this one, Jan Ormerod also has a book called "Whoosh Around the Mulberry Bush.
Big Fat HenBig Fat Hen by Keith Baker
Buy new: $6.00 / Used from: $0.95
A simple count-to-ten book, but OH! the illustrations! The chickens are bright and bold, and the story only has a few words per page...perfect for a kiddo that wants something very fast-paced and bright.
Hilary Knight's Twelve Days of ChristmasHilary Knight's Twelve Days of Christmas
Buy used from: $0.01
This is a beautiful, beautiful book. There are so many little details to each picture, kids and adults alike will want to spend hours looking at all the subplots and hilarity going on behind the scenes. My favorite sing-along Christmas book, by far.
My Favorite ThingsMy Favorite Things by Richard Rodgers
Buy new: $15.38 / Used from: $6.78
My kids love this book. The illustrations are beautiful and warm, and the story/song shows a happy relationship between a little brother and sister. There are also some sweet scenes with their mom, and the book is dedicated to step-mothers. This one gets requested over and over, but it's so lovely I enjoy opening it each time.
The Seals on the Bus (An Owlet Book)The Seals on the Bus (An Owlet Book) by Lenny Hort
Buy new: $7.95 / Used from: $0.38
A cute spin-off of "The Wheels on the Bus," but instead of actions each new page talks about wild animals getting on the bus. Instead of wheels? Seals! Instead of wipers? Vipers! Kids will love seeing the reactions of the passengers, and it's good for teaching animal noises. Very silly!
The Journey Home from Grandpa's PB w CD (Sing Along With Fred Penner)The Journey Home from Grandpa's PB w CD (Sing Along With Fred Penner) by Jemima Lumley
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.87
Sung to "The Wheels on the Bus," it's a brightly illustrated look at different kinds of vehicles, boats, etc. Introduces colors, too! My kids love this book far more than I thought they would.
Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar?Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar? by Bonnie Lass
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $6.42
Can you tell our kids love animals? This one is a little different, in that it takes place in the Southwest, with a desert backdrop. Skunks, mice, ravens, rabbits, turtles, etc. search out who took the cookies from the cookie jar. As they search, day fades to night. It could be a fun daytime story or a softly-chanted nighttime story, too. Cute.
Over in the Meadow (Picture Books)Over in the Meadow (Picture Books) by Ezra Jack Keats
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.74
Another counting rhythm book, but with such sweet and lovely illustrations! A classic. There are many other versions of this book, too, so it's worth doing a search if you like the song.
Somewhere in the OceanSomewhere in the Ocean by Jennifer Ward
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.48
Sung to the same tune as "Over in the Meadow," this book has lovely illustrations of underwater families...sharks, turtles, fish, manatees, etc. At the end of the counting, there are pages with fun facts about each kind of animal.
This Land Is Your LandThis Land Is Your Land by Woody Guthrie
Buy used from: $0.75
This book's real treasures are the illustrations. Each folk-art page is a collection of so many details...it's the kind of book you read again and again as a parent, and each time there's something new to look at. The book's message of environmentalism and social justice is definitely above the heads of most preschoolers, but as a parent I like how this book introduces the concepts.
Old MacDonald Had a Farm (Classic Books)Old MacDonald Had a Farm (Classic Books)
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01
Another classic. Each page has a cut-out to reveal a new animal hidden on the farm, and the book is designed to get pretty rowdy with all the new and old verses of animal noises. Be warned, though, Old Macdonald is shown with a rifle and an empty bottle (of alcohol?) They're just side illustrations, not at all involved in the story, but it's something to be aware of. Still a classic!
Dr. Seuss's ABC (I Can Read It All By Myself Beginner Books)Dr. Seuss's ABC (I Can Read It All By Myself Beginner Books) by Dr. Seuss
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
Classic, goofy, rhythmic rhymes like only Dr. Seuss can write. "Big F, little f, F..f..F, Four fluffy feathers on a fiffer-feffer-feff." The challenge is to read it without getting tongue-tied. So fun! The Seuss "Foot Book" was also a big hit with my 1-year old.
Snuggle Puppy (Boynton on Board)Snuggle Puppy (Boynton on Board) by Sandra Boynton
Buy new: $6.95 / Used from: $0.01
Such a great book. I prefer getting all the small board books, rather than the collections of songs she's put out with CDs. Each board book reads so quickly, and has such clever simple illustrations, whereas the collections are one whole song per page.
Clap Your Hands (Paperstar Book)Clap Your Hands (Paperstar Book) by Lorinda Bryan Cauley
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.31
If you like the bounce of the Sandra Boynton books, you'll love this one. Lots of movement and body part words, and cute illustrations of kids and animals. "Clap your hands/Stomp your feet./Shake your arms then take a seat./Rub your tummy,/pat your head./Find something yellow/Find something red."
JamberryJamberry by Bruce Degen
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
This one is new to our house, and the kids love it. I don't sing it, but it has a rhythm that's great and the words are fun to say. Also, the illustrations are fun--on each new page the next page's activity is hinted at. "Quickberry! Quackberry! Pick me a blackberry!/ Trainberry Trackberry Clickety-clackberry..."
To Market, To MarketTo Market, To Market by Anne Miranda
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $1.64
Another new addition to our family... it's based on the familiar rhyme "to market to market to buy a fat pig," but it's about an older lady who keeps bringing farm animals back to her house. One by one the animals cause a mess, and on each page you see the commotion grow and grow. At the end she makes a big pot of soup for all the animals to enjoy. Bright, active illustrations.
Jingle Bells (Holiday Board Books)Jingle Bells (Holiday Board Books) by Michael Scott
Buy used from: $0.01
A short, simple board book with the words to "Jingle Bells" and some very cute pictures of kids. Toddlers love seeing other toddlers, and I really like that his collections of books feature kids of all races.
Eight Silly MonkeysEight Silly Monkeys
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $0.01
My kids love this book--we get out a monkey puppet and shake our fingers while we sing along. Bright, cute, and as an added bonus each page has a rubber monkey face. If you like this one, you might also want to try the Ten Little Ladybug book and the Ten Wishing Stars book. Both can be sung to "Twinkle Twinkle" and the illustrations are kid favorites.
Clap Your Hands (Puppet Book)Clap Your Hands (Puppet Book) by Random House
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $0.01
Great for the youngest toddlers around 9-12 months. This was one of the first books my youngest liked--the puppet works surprisingly well, and you can make him scratch his nose, rub his tummy, do a dance, etc.
The Ballad of Valentine (Picture Puffin Books)The Ballad of Valentine (Picture Puffin Books) by Alison Jackson
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.57
Another book that adults will enjoy as they sing along...the words and illustrations are just plain funny, sung to the tune of "Oh My Darling Clementine."
We're Going on a Bear HuntWe're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.90
Lovely, gentle book of a father taking his little children on a bear "hunt" (really a hike through mud, meadow, snow, and woods). Repetitive text, soft pastel and grey illustrations, and fabulous noise-making opportunities "Squelch! Splosh! Swishy!" Probably not a bedtime book, though, since they find and are chased by a bear. :)
A-Hunting We Will Go!A-Hunting We Will Go! by Steven Kellogg
Buy used from: $0.01
We just got this one; at first I didn't like it. It's very busy visually. My kids seem to like it a lot, though. It's jaunty and goofy, and every page has something joke-like on it. It's not about hunting, but about getting ready for bed. Toddlers will like the silly peppy song; slightly older kids will understand the humor and word play.
Up, Down, and AroundUp, Down, and Around by Katherine Ayres
Buy new: $13.25 / Used from: $3.14
A very fast read, but it has a snappy little beat to it. It's about vegetables, and how they grow. Kinda nice to see a garden in action--that potatoes come from the ground, not the grocery store. "Corn grows up. Carrots grow down. Cucumbers climb around and around." Simple, but fun. My 15 mo. old signs for this one again and again.
What a Wonderful World (Jean Karl Books)What a Wonderful World (Jean Karl Books) by George David Weiss
Buy new: $13.67 / Used from: $2.99
This is a lovely, calming book. Perfect for bedtime or for a cuddly afternoon read. The pictures are bright, somewhat abstract, and very colorful, and (as you'd expect with this Armstrong classic) the children's puppet show celebrates multiculturalism and the beauty of the world. Wonderful book, wonderful message.
Hush, Little Baby: A Folk Song with PicturesHush, Little Baby: A Folk Song with Pictures by Marla Frazee
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $1.50
As good as the Sylvia Long version, but the actual lyrics of the song. The challenge with this book is that the illustrations are SO good, your eye wants to linger on them longer than it takes to sing each phrase of the song! The illustrations are brilliant-they tell a funny, dear, complicated story on their own. Bravo for making a fantastic illustrated song book!
The Farmer In The DellThe Farmer In The Dell by Ilse Plume
Buy used from: $11.93
A very sweet book, with lots of scenes of rural life and farm animals so the kiddies love it. It's the traditional song, but the illustrations are wonderful. They show the seasons, the farm and all its responsibilities, and a very loving happy family (nurse and pets included). Could be a nighttime book or a fun daytime book.
Hush, Little DragonHush, Little Dragon by Boni Ashburn
Buy new: $12.44 / Used from: $5.39
A new book, set to the tune of "Hush Little Baby." A funny book about a picky dragon who won't (despite all his mother's urgings) eat knights, magicians, or any of the foods his mother offers. Dark humor, but done well...sure to be a hit with picky toddlers everywhere.
