Dramatist's Toolkit,The: The Craft of the Working PlaywrightDramatist's Toolkit,The: The Craft of the Working Playwright by Jeffrey Sweet
Buy new: $12.55 / Used from: $5.75
There are tons of valuable tips in this book and it's companion volume, "Solving Your Script." This book was highly (and repetitively) recommended to aspiring bookwriters by John Sparks of the Academy for New Musical Theatre in LA because playwrights routinely overlooked the common-sense suggestions Sweet has to offer.

Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $18.90
If you can't make it to see McKee give his extraordinary seminar "performance" on his ideas about screenwriting, buy the book. Even if you've seen the seminar, it's still a great reference.
Adventures in the Screen TradeAdventures in the Screen Trade by William Goldman
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $3.00
Robert McKee referred to this book a lot in his seminar due to Goldman's discussion of structure. It was one of the earliest books I read on the subject, and Goldman is such an interesting writer that I couldn't put it down. He also exemplifies the challenges of turning a short story into a screenplay.

Buy new: $22.41 / Used from: $21.05
This book offers a thorough discussion of genre and how you can approach extending it. I think it's very thought-provoking.
Screenplay: The Foundations of ScreenwritingScreenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting by Syd Field

Playmaking: A manual of craftsmanshipPlaymaking: A manual of craftsmanship by William Archer
Buy used from: $205.00
Lou Florimonte, who runs the Directing for TV and Cinema program at CalArts, recommends this somewhat dated book and it DOES have a lot of great structural principals in it.
Stein On Writing: A Master Editor of Some of the Most Successful Writers of Our Century Shares His Craft Techniques and StrategiesStein On Writing: A Master Editor of Some of the Most Successful Writers of Our Century Shares His Craft Techniques and Strategies by Sol Stein
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $7.79
I was led to this book by Lou Florimonte as well, and although it doesn't address writing for stage or screen, it offers a lot of thought-provoking ideas about developing characters and interesting stories.
The Making of a MusicalThe Making of a Musical by Lehman Engel
Buy used from: $7.99
This is the only worthwhile book on writing a musical, by the director of the BMI Musical Writing workshops (later the core of the curriculum for the LA Academy for New Musical Theater). His extensive experience working on Broadway informs his writing and analysis. Extensive references to musical theater repertoire require the reader to search out, study, and apply the principles he discusses.
The Musical Theater Workshop (Sound Seminars Series 24 Audio Cassettes + Booklet) (Sound Seminars Series 2 Book, 24 Audio Cassettes)The Musical Theater Workshop (Sound Seminars Series 24 Audio Cassettes + Booklet) (Sound Seminars Series 2 Book, 24 Audio Cassettes) by Lehman Engel
Buy new: $195.00 / Used from: $515.16
This is a series of audio cassettes of Lehman Engel's Musical Theater writing and composing workshop. Rather rare and an exceptional investment.
Writing the Broadway MusicalWriting the Broadway Musical by Aaron Frankel
Buy new: $12.92 / Used from: $6.21
For a long time, this was the only book I could find on the process of writing a musical. The creative insights are few and far between. It's not terribly helpful for writers. What is does offer is some insightful ANALYSIS of "Company" and "My Fair Lady."
The Musical from the Inside OutThe Musical from the Inside Out by Stephen Citron
Buy new: $18.32 / Used from: $9.24
This is a general introduction to the process of putting a musical show together. The insights into writing are cursory, but it does cover a lot of relevant topics, offering a context for seeing the whole production develop.
The Crafty Art of PlaymakingThe Crafty Art of Playmaking by Alan Ayckbourn
Buy new: $17.90 / Used from: $9.39
I love Ayckbourn's writing so much that I couldn't leave this out, although mostly it offers practical suggestions regarding writing a play that you'd like to see get performed, rather than sit on a shelf. It doesn't have as much advice on the actual writing process as I'd hoped for, especially from someone who has crafted the most intricate dramatic structures on stage to date.
Art Of Dramatic Writing: Its Basis in the Creative Interpretation of Human MotivesArt Of Dramatic Writing: Its Basis in the Creative Interpretation of Human Motives by Lajos Egri
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $2.40
This was recommended to me by a member of the Ridiculous Theater Company in NYC's West Village. He had studied with Egri. It doesn't offer as much insight into structure as many other books, but it does take a deeper look at character and the types of conflict that can be employed to develop your story.
Impro: Improvisation and the TheatreImpro: Improvisation and the Theatre by Keith Johnstone
Buy new: $19.11 / Used from: $12.89
This is a book about theatrical improvisation, but I have found that it really sets the stage for writing and developing characters in a story.
Truth in Comedy: The Manual of ImprovisationTruth in Comedy: The Manual of Improvisation by Charna Halpern
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $8.20
A friend with extensive improv comedy experience recommended this book, and again, I found it really got the creative juices flowing when writing.

The Songwriters Idea Book: 40 Strategies to Excite Your Imagination, Help You Design Distinctive Songs, and Keep Your Creative FlowThe Songwriters Idea Book: 40 Strategies to Excite Your Imagination, Help You Design Distinctive Songs, and Keep Your Creative Flow by Sheila Davis
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $3.40
If you're a lyric writer, Davis is just about the only writer worth spending any time reading. Unfortunately she cross-references her three books continually. Of the three, this volume is the most thought-provoking. It contains less nitty-gritty technique than the others, but more structural approaches to get your juices flowing.
The Craft of Lyric WritingThe Craft of Lyric Writing by Sheila Davis
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $5.97
This is the bible of lyric writing. There's not much more to be said for it, except that she is exceptionally systematic and thorough in explaining the craft.
Tunesmith: Inside the Art of SongwritingTunesmith: Inside the Art of Songwriting by Jimmy Webb

Although this isn't as methodical as Sheila Davis' books, Webb's exceptional success as a songwriter informs every page of the book, and it's an engaging read.
Sondheim's Broadway Musicals (The Michigan American Music Series)Sondheim's Broadway Musicals (The Michigan American Music Series) by Stephen 0 Banfield
Buy new: $21.86 / Used from: $14.29
This book offers some analysis and discussion of the evolution of many of Sondheim's works. Very technical, but interesting.

The New Comprehensive American Rhyming DictionaryThe New Comprehensive American Rhyming Dictionary by Sue Young
Buy used from: $22.05
This was recommended to me by a very experienced lyricist, and may be more contemporary than the Clement Wood dictionary. I like it a little better too.
On WritingOn Writing by Stephen King
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.64
This is an engaging look into King's life and process, and it seems he was aptly named.
Zen in the Art of Writing: Releasing the Creative Genius Within YouZen in the Art of Writing: Releasing the Creative Genius Within You by Ray Bradbury
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.56
I loved Ray Bradbury's stories as a kid, and found out why when I read his description of how he wrote adventure stories and NOT science fiction. Again, not a dramatic writing book, per se, but offers inspiration and insight into the writer's craft.
Writing for Your Life: Discovering the Story of Your Life's JourneyWriting for Your Life: Discovering the Story of Your Life's Journey by Deena Metzger
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $0.01
This isn't a dramatic writing book, but I find Deena's ideas inspiring and thought-provoking. She really helps you to address the personal elements of the stories you have to tell, the deeper mythical and spiritual elements that inform them, and how to make writing an integral part of your life and self-expression.
