Here it is, all you need to get started in one volume. You'll learn the fretboard, how to read music, the value of notes, and how to play some really simple tunes. In addition, you'll get some exposure to various styles of playing, and three CD's to let you hear what you should sound like. SO, this is book one!

This is my choice for a "feel good" bass book. You don't really get any tunes here, you get some "phrases" you can play all over the fretboard. They are all blues, they all sound good, and in no time you should be able to play most of them. Thus, you "feel good" about your progress! You can buy this with the Hal Leonard book above.

What, ANOTHER blues book? Yup. And this one will take you a LOT further than the other one. To play this, you'll do a lot more thinking, but you'll also play real tunes. Why blues? Simple. It tends to follow a lot of repetitive finger patterns. Thus, you play songs faster!

Ignore the ugly cover (who designed THAT one?!). This may be my FAVORITE beginner bass book, and the one that may end up teaching you more about music (assuming like most beginners you know nothing) than any other bass book. Here you will learn about the "ii-V-I" progression, turnarounds, alternate fingerings (patterns) and a lot more.
The Chord Wheel: The Ultimate Tool for All MusiciansThe Chord Wheel: The Ultimate Tool for All Musicians by Jim Fleser
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $10.39
This is not a bass book, this is a "theory" book. Then again, it's not really a theory book either, it is a "shortcut" to understanding music. If you want to understand how songs are build by chord progression, this is the fastest way to do it without reading your way thru a theory book.

Drills drills and more drills. This is not a "learning" book, this is a drills book thru and thru, beginning to end. If you have the disciple and drive to want to move around the fretboard with ease, this one will get you there. It is NOT set up to teach you anything, so you could buy this at any time and start anywhere with it.
