Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-ShirtNiandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt by John Frusciante
Buy used from: $7.08
In the midst of the nineties' Grunge era, more known for things such as naked babies swimming after baited cash and songs about metaphorical roosters, a young John Frusciante was off in a room with his guitar and a 4-track, recording what would inevitably become one of the decade's most avant garde records.
Second AttentionSecond Attention by Wooden Wand and the Sky High Band
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.56
James Toth paints Second Attention's songs in a sound as seemingly vintage as the record's amber skied cover art. The album's opener 'Crucifixion Pt.2' alone is worth the price of admission, featuring a perfectly cathartic harmonica solo that Rob Zimmerman himself would approve of.
Bo Diddley Is a GunslingerBo Diddley Is a Gunslinger by Bo Diddley
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.68
Originally released in 1961, this holds up today as an irresistibly enjoyable blues/rock record. A prime choice for curing those born with little rhythm, 'Gunslinger' is music you feel in your bones.
Hey JudeHey Jude by Wilson Pickett
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $10.44
OK, so you might not be quite the lover that Wilson Pickett's songs suggest him to be, but why not take a musical lesson from the soul legend himself. This album's songs will alternately put a groove in your stride, a grin on your face, and perhaps even provide a little company for a broken heart.
On the BeachOn the Beach by Neil Young
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.74
A friend told me several years ago that if I liked Neil Young then I simply HAD to listen to the song 'Ambulance Blues' from On The Beach. It was immediately one of my favorite songs of his, and the rest of the album is just as amazing.
The Who Sell OutThe Who Sell Out by The Who
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.00
My personal favorite Who record, and one of my favorite psychedelic pop records ever. Brilliantly fun and inventive, 'Sell Out' sounds alot more like something The Kinks wish they'd made.
Arthur - Or The Decline And Fall Of The British EmpireArthur - Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire by The Kinks
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.99
Speaking of which... Their true masterpiece. Ray Davies' songwriting and the band's musicianship was really at its peak here.
Perfect from Now OnPerfect from Now On by Built to Spill
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.49
It's Doug Martsch's world and we're all just living in it. An example of the limitless possibilities that can be achieved when an electric guitar is placed in the hands of a genius.
Golden Vessyl of SoundGolden Vessyl of Sound by Yume Bitsu
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $2.55
Cut from the same cloth as fellow prog-rockers Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky, Yume Bitsu somehow manage to deliver the same cathartic build-up/release of energy in a much more organic, 'free' sounding fashion. Their self-titled is just as amazing.
Red Extensions of MeRed Extensions of Me by Flashbulb
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $27.44
AFX vs Miles Davis vs cinematic film scores...basically if you took the most accessible, eclectic moments of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher's music, you would have yourself some Flashbulb. In all honesty he is probably more versatile in his musical scope than both mentioned predecessors.
Harmony in UltravioletHarmony in Ultraviolet by Tim Hecker
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $9.50
Quite possibly the most breathtaking ambient album ever made. The kind of record when at its best moments will easily induce goosebumps, 'Harmony' navigates you through the most beautiful places within your memories and subconscious. This is what I imagine 'life flashing before your eyes' must feel like; the soundtrack to a slide show of the human soul.
Selected Ambient Works 85-92Selected Ambient Works 85-92 by Aphex Twin
Buy used from: $15.97
Another must-have ambient classic, Richard D. James' collection here is years ahead of its time.
DilateDilate by Bardo Pond
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.97
"Psychedelic".."Drone"..."Space Rock". Call it what you will, this is good stuff. The opening track finds a Neil Young grunge riff buried under a synth bed of swarming mosquitoes. Uniquely haunting music.
DepthsDepths by Windy & Carl
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.79
BLISSFUL. 'Depths' is quite simply like being lost at the bottom of the ocean in your own private submarine. you should perhaps be wondering which way leads home, but you're too distracted by how infinitely damn beautiful it is down here.
Refinement of the DeclineRefinement of the Decline by Stars of the Lid
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $41.52
Yup, more great ambient music. Easily one of the year's best records, 'Refinement' is an album that equally emphasizes not only the layered sounds but the gaps of silence in between, and succeeds in creating one of the most cinematic pieces of music I've ever heard.
Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? by Of Montreal
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.38
Possibly the best album of 2007. Certainly the most ambitious. A psyche-pop/electro/funk record about failed love and all the nuances of a relationship gone sour, 'Hissing Fauna' re-invents the concept of what a breakup album should aesthetically sound like. An absolute pleasure from first track to last.
Blood on the TracksBlood on the Tracks by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $6.99
And while we're on the subject of the break-up record...Dylan wrote this collection of confessional songs soon after his divorce with Sara Lowndes. Sure it's an obvious pick that's been in a million different 'best of' lists, but Blood On The Tracks really is one of the greatest albums ever recorded, and the last true masterpiece in Dylan's sprawling catalog of work.
Wonderwall MusicWonderwall Music by George Harrison
Buy used from: $69.00
...Transcendent...
SouvlakiSouvlaki by Slowdive
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.98
one of the best records of the 90's. Grossly underrated.
QuiqueQuique by Seefeel
Buy used from: $3.50
if i lived and worked in a space station on the moon, 'Quique' would be something I'd want loaded up on my ipod at all times.
On FireOn Fire by Galaxie 500
Buy used from: $14.52
One of the most influential bands in the history of modern "indie" rock. Featuring aural guitar riffs beyond dreamy, On Fire is a fluffy cloud of pure bliss to float you through nostalgic blue summer skies.
Under the Western FreewayUnder the Western Freeway by Grandaddy
Buy used from: $1.24
Part Flaming Lips, part Weezer, and several parts "holy !@#$, where did they even come up with these sounds?!" A truly awesome record that I would recommend to just about anyone.
The Sophtware SlumpThe Sophtware Slump by Grandaddy
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $0.67
From crunchy power-pop ('Hewlett's Daughter'), to downright haunting lyrics backed by melodically moody synths, bleeping sounds of dying robots, and the gorgeously sweeping harmonies of what seem to be an angel's voice ('Jed The Humanoid'), 'Sophtware Slump' showcases Jason Lytle's knack for penning bittersweet songs about longing for a thing or place that no longer exists.
Isn't AnythingIsn't Anything by My Bloody Valentine
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.88
Not as immediately accessible as Loveless, but Isn't Anything will truly reward after a few listens.
Liquid SwordsLiquid Swords by Genius
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.10
The best of all the Wu classics, featuring one of the sharpest members of the group effortlessly laying down lyrics over Rza's other-worldly beats. A MUST have for anybody even remotely interested in Hip-hop.
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to HeavenLift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You Black Emperor
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $10.48
Mogwai are excellent, Explosions In The Sky are great, but none yield the pure peaking power of Godspeed's music. Listening to these songs through a pair of good headphones is a downright spiritual experience.
ZenZen by DJ Krush
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $3.98
Krush has released several excellent records. Zen is a wise place to start.
Os MutantesOs Mutantes by Os Mutantes
Buy used from: $12.25
just a very, very groovy record. Classic Brazilian tropicalia-laced psychedelia. mmm tasty.
Yesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OKYesterday Was Dramatic - Today Is OK by Múm
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.99
My favorite piece of music to come out of Iceland yet. YES, that IS what i'm insinuating...Sigur who?
Wolf CityWolf City by Amon Düül II
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $15.29
one of the first true krautrock bands, and possibly the best, Amon Duul II is early 70's psychedelic music with a pronounced 'epic-ness' to it.
Pisces IscariotPisces Iscariot by Smashing Pumpkins
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.00
BEAUTIFUL.
