Buy new: $37.80 / Used from: $32.50 This is a tome, but if you want to understand how we perceive the audible world around us there is no better reference.
A little advice, start by reading the first and last chapters. In the first he establishes the scope of the book, and in the last he gives his conclusions. Bregman actually suggests this in his forward.

Buy new: $37.75 / Used from: $41.50 The best book on the market for info about sound FX and audio processing in general. Mr. Case's approach is readable and deep. It includes just enough math, science, and psychoacoustics to answer the burning questions. His approach to distortion compression and delay is particularly good, and after reading this book I have changed my method of teaching those topics.

You should supplement this book with a thorough reference on your sequencer of choice.
