Fumbling Towards EcstasyFumbling Towards Ecstasy by Sarah McLachlan
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $0.96
This and "Surfacing" are the most popular albums, and deservedly so. One great song after another.
SurfacingSurfacing by Sarah McLachlan
Buy new: $8.97 / Used from: $0.90
Of course, you can't leave Sarah out of any list of top-quality female vocalists. She's one of the best for more than a decade.
So FarSo Far by Monica Schroeder
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $7.98
Though lesser-known, Monica is also one of those smooth, memorable voices that is right up there with Sarah McLachlan in my book. The songs are so dreamy and emotional.
OrbitOrbit
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $12.00
This album has some more great songs from Monica and shouldn't be missed by any fan of female vocal pop.
The ReminderThe Reminder by Feist
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.78
This is a cool act, playing a mix of jazz, pop, and rock, always with a unique twist. Though it is sometimes hard to understand what this girl is saying, her use of vocal layering and harmonies, and the shear style makes is a fun listen. I consider it a more accessible answer to Bjork.
DetailsDetails by Frou Frou
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $4.83
I like this blend of vocals by Imogen Heap with cool, almost new-wave flavored instrumentation. A solid pop album through and through.
Speak for YourselfSpeak for Yourself by Imogen Heap
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.01
And you should also check out Imogen Heap's own album (aside from the Frou Frou project).
Nuages du MondeNuages du Monde by Delerium
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $12.02
I've always loved the blend of cool electronics, ethnic elements, and female vocals found on any album by Delerium, though I prefer the newer albums over the older ones.
Stars and SirensStars and Sirens by Pristina
Buy new: $12.99
This is one of the most perfect blends of great female vocals with dreamy, rich electronic production. Each song is very memorable, and even though there are different singers, they come together to create a great album that has a unified, beautiful flow.
Extraordinary WaysExtraordinary Ways by Conjure One
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $7.49
Although it's almost considered a copy of Delerium, it's every bit as good, with a variety of great female vocalists and a cool blend of ethno-pop and electronics.
Conjure OneConjure One
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $9.00
This is also a great Conjure One album.
SinglesSingles by Alison Moyet
Buy used from: $3.49
Alison Moyet is one of my all-time favorite female vocalists, all the way from her early days with synthpop band Yazoo (Yaz) through her later blues stuff.
VoiceVoice by Alison Moyet
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.90
This Alison Moyet album focuses on her great voice, using more traditional tunes. It's great!
A Perfect WreckA Perfect Wreck by Capsize
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.62
I LOVE the lyrical approach on this album. Each song is so packed with melancholy and emotional turmoil, in a great way. It's really cool with a vocal approach that is sometimes deadpan and sometimes desparate.
One Cell In the SeaOne Cell In the Sea by A Fine Frenzy
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.08
This is a great album for pop / rock fans who want a really cool female lead and some songs with real personality.
Feels Like HomeFeels Like Home by Norah Jones
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.59
Norah has a great knack for blending folk with jazz and blues, and her voice is always unforgettable.
Polaroids: A Greatest Hits CollectionPolaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection by Shawn Colvin
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.35
Pretty much every album by Shawn Colvin is worth collecting, but if you don't have any, then pick up the hits. She's one of my favorite folk pop singers.
Modern RomanceModern Romance by Sasha Dobson
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $2.61
This is GREAT, romantic, Brazilian-styled bossa nova, but in English. Having spent time in Brazil, I love the style. Around here, it's probably considered more a blend of guitar folk and jazz, but hey, it's good any way you look at it.
MedusaMedusa by Annie Lennox
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $0.01
Here is another unforgettable female voice that dates from the 80's with Eurythmics to her recent stuff. She stands out of the crowd, for sure.
Paint the Sky with Stars: The Best of EnyaPaint the Sky with Stars: The Best of Enya by Enya
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.30
No list of great female vocals is complete without throwing in some songs by Enya. Her only weakness, in my opinion, is that every album follows the same stylistic approach, but it works! So, you're fine with a hits collection. She really created her own genre, and it's beautiful.
MaireMaire by Maire Brennan
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.44
Though Enya is far better known, her sister Maire Brennan is also a wonderful singer. She has more of a folk background with the Celtic group Clannad, but I prefer her solo stuff which becomes a little more contemporary, though always with a wonderful touch of celtic tradition.
Parallel DreamsParallel Dreams by Loreena McKennitt
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $13.73
I became a fan of Loreena McKennitt with this Parallel Dreams album back in the early 90's. It's Celtic folk, but with a heavy dose of passion, and lush arrangements. It's a great place to start.
The Book of SecretsThe Book of Secrets by Loreena McKennitt
Buy used from: $1.01
Loreena later began to blend in other world traditions with her music, including some middle-easter flavors. But one thing remains a constant-- her voice is always incredible!
AidalaiAidalai by Mecano
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $5.00
OK, this on is a band from Spain, and thus the lyrics are all in Spanish. But don't let that scare you away. She has one of the most beautiful voices in pop music! I also love the arrangements, which vary from synthpop and dance to Latin salsa and Flamenco. Just a solid, wonderful album!
TigerlilyTigerlily by Natalie Merchant
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.01
Natalie gained her fame with the group 10,000 Maniacs, but she can also stand on her own two feet. Her voice is unique, and maybe not as "smooth" as others on this list, but I love her sound.
Weaving My Ancestors' VoicesWeaving My Ancestors' Voices by Sheila Chandra
Buy used from: $5.49
OK, if you want a touch of middle-eastern and Indian tradition, here is an album to pick up. WOW! This woman can sing! It's not pop-- it's definitely "world music", but it's great.
Careless LoveCareless Love by Madeleine Peyroux
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $3.99
This is the perfect, smokey-club, down-tempo vocal jazz. Her voice is perfect for the style, and sometimes it just fits my mood perfectly.
Fisherman's WomanFisherman's Woman by Emiliana Torrini
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.98
This gal has a unique and wonderful voice. Her blend of pop, folk, and her relaxed presentation is wonderful. You can put it on, kick back, and drift away.
The Velvet HourThe Velvet Hour
Buy new: $9.99
This is the latest offering from Somegirl, an electronic act that has put out three albums, each time with a different vocalist. It's always a nice combination of smooth and sensual, with peppy and danceable.
She's Full of SecretsShe's Full of Secrets by Somegirl
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $3.99
This was the 2nd Somegirl album, and has some really smooth, nice tracks on it.
Have You Ever Touched a Dream?Have You Ever Touched a Dream? by Day Behavior
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.79
This is totally poppy, with songs that even made into the popular "Dance Dance Revolution" game for XBox. But the singer's voice is so dreamy, breathy, and sugar sweet.
Worrisome HeartWorrisome Heart by Melody Gardot
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $3.98
Melody has a really smooth voice and reminds me a lot of Norah Jones. This is an excellent, relaxing album!
October ProjectOctober Project by October Project
Buy used from: $2.35
This was such a cool early 90's pop/rock band with a singer that has a beautiful and unforgettable voice. She sounds very unique-- can't think of another singer that sounds like this.
WinterWinter
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $12.50
This is the third album by Glow, and it's a good one, as is their first two. The combination of the electronics, acoustic elements, and her voice are sublime.
