Reggae Bloodlines: In Search Of The Music And Culture Of JamaicaReggae Bloodlines: In Search Of The Music And Culture Of Jamaica by Stephen Davis
Buy used from: $11.32
This was the first and only book on Reggae back in the day. That day being the late 70's or early 80's. Some of photographer Peter Simon's black and whites are still iconic even in today's high gloss digital reality. Good coverage of what would be called the roots era.
This Is Reggae Music: The Story of Jamaica's MusicThis Is Reggae Music: The Story of Jamaica's Music by Lloyd Bradley
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $7.00
Don't let the straight forward title mislead you, this is a great read from cover to cover. The book is a history of the politics that shaped the suffrah's music. Gives the big picture. This book doesn't play favorites. Just lays down the history as it unfolded.

Bass Culture: When Reggae Was KingBass Culture: When Reggae Was King by Lloyd Bradley
Buy used from: $27.12
I haven't read this yet, but on the strenght of his "This is Reggae Music", I will. NOTE- I learned that I actually have read this, it's the afforementioned book in it's orginal form. Apparently, this is the British print and the name was changed by the publishers. For whatever reasons, only the suits know.
Solid Foundation: An Oral History of ReggaeSolid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae by David Katz

You'll recognize the name from a zillion cd sleeve notes and critiques. Mr. Katz knows his stuff and if you read him, you will know yours. Learning is that simple.
People Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Revised EditionPeople Funny Boy: The Genius of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Revised Edition by David Katz

This book fills in all cracks with little details about the man, the myth and legend that is Lee "Scratch" Perry. Scratch's personal story is reggae's story.
Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae (Music Culture)Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae (Music Culture) by Michael Veal
Buy new: $18.45 / Used from: $14.19
It's a bit academic in places, but the author manages to squeeze some juice out of dried up theories. So just when you feel yourself about to yawn, he gets your attention back. In all fairness, I will give this book another read because you always spin a record more than once before passing judgement. Right?
Catch a Fire: The Life of Bob MarleyCatch a Fire: The Life of Bob Marley by Timothy White
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $7.55
This is considered THE biography about Bob. I can see why. Slight of gossip and packed with fact.
The Rough Guide to Reggae 3 (Rough Guide Music Guides) (Rough Guide Reference)The Rough Guide to Reggae 3 (Rough Guide Music Guides) (Rough Guide Reference) by Steve Barrow
Buy used from: $39.19
I had to get used to the scrattershot approach, for instance, someone like Lee Perry will have 1 or 2 records reviewed under the dub chapter and then another few reviewed under another chapter. Once I figured out Barrow and Dalton's method of madness, this book includes some mighty rare info.
The Book of Exodus: The Making and Meaning of Bob Marley and the Wailers' Album of the CenturyThe Book of Exodus: The Making and Meaning of Bob Marley and the Wailers' Album of the Century by Vivien Goldman
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.93
Yeah, an enjoyable read cover to cover. Nothing to earth shattering but Vivien shakes it up a little. Kind of like watching a movie you did not expect to be good but it keeps your butt planted still for two hours.
The First Rasta: Leonard Howell and the Rise of RastafarianismThe First Rasta: Leonard Howell and the Rise of Rastafarianism by Helene Lee
Buy new: $13.22 / Used from: $9.50
This should be made into that movie. She proves to be an interesting outsider looking in. Or is she? Helene Lee is a French writer that was once married to Alphy Blondy. She digs up a lot of long dead facts. And those facts she digs up may vex a lot of history buffs.
Marley Legend: An Illustrated Life of Bob MarleyMarley Legend: An Illustrated Life of Bob Marley by James Henke

Whether you believe him to be a Prophet of Jah or just a man. Marley the Rude Boy grew up to be a messenger of peace. Pictures are always worth a thousand words.
Exodus: Bob Marley & The WailersExodus: Bob Marley & The Wailers

A great snap shot of life on the tour bus. Some fine moments frozen in time.
The RastafariansThe Rastafarians by Leonard E. Barrett
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $5.24
This is not the one I was looking for, but it caught my eye. I noticed a lot more books about the faith of the Sufferah are in print. Most of it coming from grass roots publishing. Book pushers intent on education than commercial gains. Works for me.
No Woman No Cry: My Life with Bob MarleyNo Woman No Cry: My Life with Bob Marley by Rita Marley

I've been meaning to read this.

Reggae Explosion: The Story of Jamaican MusicReggae Explosion: The Story of Jamaican Music by Chris Salewicz

Since the text is for casual glance, this book comes to life from beyond the coffee table, by letting the pictures tell the story!

A fun collection of odds and ends. Peter Simon again.
