Shure SM57-LC Cardioid Dynamic MicrophoneShure SM57-LC Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
Buy new: $99.00 / Used from: $87.00
the "Hammer of the Industry"! The sm57 sounds great on anything and makes a great fallback. Shure had a demo of this mic where they would hammer a nail into a board with it and then plug it in to show that it still worked perfectly! If you're planning on recording music its a good idea to have a couple of these.

A nice condenser mic. it sounds good for vocals, guitar and such. condenser mics are more sensitive than dynamics like the sm57, but because its made by shure, it passes a 10 foot drop test! (something no other large diaphram condenser can do, that i know of.)

Of course you will need a computer. protools will run on mac or PC, so its up to you to use what you feel comfortable with. (personally, I'm a PC user, but i like the way protools works on a mac much better.)

A good set of headphones is a must if you are working at home. these go a good jod at not "coloring" your sound with extra bass like consumer headphones, and they don't break the bank either.

You've gotta hear what your doing right? next to the microphone, good Reference monitors are one of your most important tools. Just like your headphones, you need speakers that don't "color" your sound so you know exactly what your recording truly sounds like. money is a pain in this area, but these sound pretty darn good for your buck!

Plugging up your speakers? TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) are used for hooking up gear most of the time. you don't want to use this on your guitar though.
