Customer Reviews
Gallery Book NOT a "Painting Bible"
The art work is fantastic but if you're looking for a step-by-step this isn't the book for you. The author discusses in very broad terms several topics, (such as lighting), but there isn't enough detail to make them applicable. The art is georgeous and the book provides inspiration but offers little real-world help.
More of a starter guide
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R22GKIQA3MM37E Bold Visions is more of a starter guide to digital painting than a bible.
It goes through the core art techniques such as colour, lighting, composition, research, materials and stuff like that. The good thing is all these concepts are explained clearly with great illustrations as examples.
The techniques and tips are presented in a pointer style as well as in the form of several step-by-step workflow screenshots. These step-by-step processes take a look at how Gary Tonge creates his digital sci-fi illustrations, as well as explain the considerations he takes to achieve certain effects -- sometimes dictated by clients. These are not tutorials that go into technical software details like changing opacity jitter and settings.
This book is recommended to beginners to digital paintings, especially fantasy and science-fiction artists.
If you're looking for step-by-step tutorials into digital painting, you might also want to check out ImagineFX's Fantasy Workshop. The tutorials there are slightly more in depth.

An Inspiration for Digital Artists
This book not only showcases beautiful and inspiring works of art, it provides advice and guidelines for artists hoping to develop their talents further. Be aware that the book does NOT provide step-by-step instructions, lists of tools, etc. on how each piece is done; that's to its credit. Rarely do artists do things in the exact same way. Gary Tonge simply presents his work and explains the concepts and processes that went into it. There are some examples of composition provided, although not with concrete rules, and an explanation of how light diffuses in some of his pieces, as well as sections on the importance of color, scale, perspective, and texures. This is not a rulebook or a stiff outline of steps. This is a guidebook. It offers suggestions and leaves the interpretation up to the reader. If you want a step-by-step tutorial, this is not for you. If you want inspiration and an understanding of what makes Tonge's art so dynamic, it's an invaluable text regardless of your choice of medium.
