A Dangerous Man: A NovelA Dangerous Man: A Novel by Charlie Huston
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.25
This is the third book that follows Henry Thompson in his life on the run from the mafia and then his life as part of the mob. It’s not the world’s greatest literature, but it’s fun, snappy writing. His stories are so quick it’s like the printed version of a movie.
No Dominion: A NovelNo Dominion: A Novel by Charlie Huston
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.00
This is the second book based on Joe Pitt – a modern day vampire. It’s not a gore-filled novel, but it’s pulp noir at its finest. Like Huston’s other books, No Dominion moves quickly and has a great story.
Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and CreativityCatching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity by David Lynch
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $1.00
Yes, this book is written by the film director David Lynch. This book is full of vignettes of how David Lynch has used meditation to help him deal with stress, negativity, and to become more creative. Lynch provides nice insights and stories of how meditation has helped him in his professional and personal life.
Slow ManSlow Man by J. M. Coetzee
Buy new: $11.90 / Used from: $0.20
Wonderful book! This is the story of Paul Rayment and his life after a bicycle accident. The accident, as the title of the book hints, costs Paul one of his legs. The book is about changes in life, unhappiness, finding happiness, and the relationships we all have with one another. Coetzee offers great dialogue, believable characters, and thought-provoking allegories.
King DorkKing Dork by Frank Portman
Buy used from: $1.23
Have you ever wanted to be in a rock-and-roll band? Portman, a real musician and songwriter, offers the story Tom Henderson and his desire to escape high school and star in his own rock and roll band. This is Portman’s first novel – and it shows in spots – but the story is intriguing and the lead character Tom Henderson constant creation of band names and album covers is hilarious.
100 Bullshit Jobs...And How to Get Them100 Bullshit Jobs...And How to Get Them by Stanley Bing
Buy new: $17.05 / Used from: $0.01
Bing, a hilarious writer, provides a job description, average pay, and a meter where the higher the number the more of a b_s job you’re dealing with. For example, he lists “Crumber” the guy that removes the crumbs from your table in fancy restaurants rates at 100, while Insurance Broker gets a rating of 119. A guilty pleasure book.
The Discomfort Zone: A Personal HistoryThe Discomfort Zone: A Personal History by Jonathan Franzen
Buy new: $8.78 / Used from: $0.01
You probably remember Franzen from The Corrections. This title is actually a collection of loosely related short stories where Franzen reflects on his childhood and early adult years. While I enjoyed the book and like Franzen’s writing style, it didn’t live up to the enjoyment of The Corrections.
ThunderstruckThunderstruck by Erik Larson
Buy new: $17.13 / Used from: $0.01
Thunderstruck is the story of how Guglielmo Marconi’s wireless radio invention helped capture a near-perfect murder by Hawley Crippen. This historical account of the love triangle that led to the murder and the politics that nearly halted wireless communications is fascinating. I highly recommend this book.
Thirteen Moons: A NovelThirteen Moons: A Novel by Charles Frazier
Buy new: $23.04 / Used from: $0.01
Cold Mountain is one of my favorite books so choosing Thirteen Moons was an easy selection. I like to say that Frazier writes in pictures – it’s easy to see his characters, the landscape, and experience the whole setting through his writing. Thirteen Moon is the story of the Cherokee Nation, the quest for land ownership, law, and “settling” all of the land east of the Mississippi River.
Perfectly Yourself: 9 Lessons for Enduring HappinessPerfectly Yourself: 9 Lessons for Enduring Happiness by Matthew Kelly
Buy new: $14.09 / Used from: $0.01
If you're looking for a well-written bit of philosophy on life, happiness, and change I recommend this book. The style is conversational, honest, and there are no campy solutions and affirmations. Each chapter also ends with a lesson for being yourself and how to apply the message of the chapter.
Way of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes LivesWay of the Peaceful Warrior: A Book That Changes Lives by Dan Millman
Buy new: $9.32 / Used from: $1.69
This is a parable about a gymnast that has his “life together” but he’s not really enjoying life. He meets an unlikely teacher and begins to see, both spiritually and literally, things he’s never seen before. The book moves quickly and some segments are metaphysical, but the message is true and accessible. I enjoyed the book though I didn’t necessarily agree with all Millman was offering.
A Long Way DownA Long Way Down by Nick Hornby
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01
If dark humor is your cup of tea, you’ll enjoy this novel. It’s the story of four would-be suicides and how their accidental meeting halts their plans “to top” themselves on New Year’s Eve. The If you’ve seen the movie “High Fidelity” with John Cusack you’re familiar with Nick Hornby – he wrote the book that movie was based on.
The SecretThe Secret by Rhonda Byrne
Buy new: $14.00 / Used from: $3.53
Ok, all the hype got me curious and I had to read this book. While I do agree with some of the points of the book, I thought some of the directions were just dangerous. I do believe we attract what we meditate on, but I guffawed at Byrne's notion that cancer, blindness, and other sickness could be wished away. All-in-all, however, I think the book has some goodness, but read with caution.
The Last of the SavagesThe Last of the Savages by Jay McInerney
Buy new: $11.86 / Used from: $0.01
Wow-oh-wow. I loved this book. Some great characters, good story, and the writing just zooms you along. It's a story of how two people with two very different backgrounds become friends and, eventually, grow up. McInery posits that our values, belief-system, and our nurturing ultimately determine the direction of our lives.
The Ultimate Gift (The Ultimate Series #1)The Ultimate Gift (The Ultimate Series #1) by Jim Stovall
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $0.01
Ho-hum. A friend recommended this book to me, and while it's a good ready, there's not much to it. The basic theme is do good things and you'll be rewarded. The reward is that you'll become a better person and then other good things will follow. It’s a simple, easy parable.
Wherever You Go, There You Are (ROUGH CUT)Wherever You Go, There You Are (ROUGH CUT) by Jon Kabat-zinn
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.97
One of my goals this year was to become more spiritual. On that premise a friend recommended this book and I'm thrilled that she did. I learned much, have tried many of the approaches to meditation, and have gone back and re-read passages that seem to linger in mind. If you're at all curious about Zen, being mindful, or trying meditation I highly recommend this book.
How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci: Seven Steps to Genius Every DayHow to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci: Seven Steps to Genius Every Day by Michael J. Gelb
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $1.40
I read the book and I don't think like da Vinci. I do, however, know more about him than ever before. This fun book gives the history, highlights, and some stories of Leonardo while providing some exercises for the reader to try. I have used some of the lessons from the book - especially the concept of mind-mapping and asking questions, questions, questions.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into ValuesZen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values by Robert M. Pirsig
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.29
More than any other book I've read this year this one has affected me the most. While I read the book months ago I've pondered its message, re-read passages, and told so many others to dig into the book. While it's not an easy read, it's a rewarding read. The content has made me question my own beliefs, values, and goals - and look onto what's important. This is a new favorite.
The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom, A Toltec Wisdom BookThe Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom, A Toltec Wisdom Book by Don Miguel Ruiz
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $8.75
This is a simple, but profound, book. I liked the prose and its simple approach at finding, keeping, peace and happiness. The four agreements are simple, but so tough to keep. They are: 1. Be impeccable with your word. 2. Don't take anything personally. 3. Don't make assumptions. 4. Always do your best.
The Rhythm of Life: Living Every Day with Passion and PurposeThe Rhythm of Life: Living Every Day with Passion and Purpose by Matthew Kelly
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $5.99
I had the opportunity to hear Matthew Kelly speak this year - and took it. He's a good speaker and writer and I enjoyed this book along with the others in the list. Having said that, Kelly's theme is "to become the best version of yourself." I agree that's a noble calling and a challenge that we should all aspire to. Thought-provoking and kudos to Kelly for a job well-done!
The ProphetThe Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
Wonderful, wonderful read. The Prophet reads like a book of verse with beautiful imagery, perfect prose, and a philosophy about men, nature, and life. I lingered over each topic and read the book twice. Highly recommended.
Reservation Road (Vintage Contemporaries)Reservation Road (Vintage Contemporaries) by John Burnham Schwartz
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Do you ever see a book bragging, "Soon to be a major motion picture" and get a little queasy? Usually when I see that sticker I know that this must be a really great story and Hollywood will screw it up. That's the case here. This is a great read: grief, guilt, thrills, and complex characters. Fantastic. Recently I saw the movie trailer it looks like Hollywood has already screwed the book.
Model BehaviorModel Behavior by Jay McInerney
Buy new: $9.60 / Used from: $0.01
Yeah, another McInerney book. Here's the pitch: big city guy, strung-out on drugs, weird family. Hmm... I liked it better when it was called Bright Lights, Big City. Don't get me wrong, McInerney is a fantastic writer, but he's been here before. It's a nice place to visit, but not to stay.
The Good Good Pig: The Extraordinary Life of Christopher HogwoodThe Good Good Pig: The Extraordinary Life of Christopher Hogwood by Sy Montgomery
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.08
I got this book for free so what can I say? I can say this is a fun read about a little pig that grows into a big hog. It's really a true story about how this spoiled pig becomes the darling of a small town. I tolerated the story at first, then began enjoying it, and then loved it. If you're looking for creative nonfiction this is it.
Life's Missing Instruction Manual : The Guidebook You Should Have Been Given at BirthLife's Missing Instruction Manual : The Guidebook You Should Have Been Given at Birth by Joe Vitale
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $6.44
Should have been called "Random Thoughts from Random People." While I enjoyed the parables, positive messages, and advice for good living, this book is hardly an instruction manual. About half-way through the book I felt like every contributor was trying to sell something else. This is a good book that could have been a great book.
The Shotgun Rule: A NovelThe Shotgun Rule: A Novel by Charlie Huston
Buy new: $14.93 / Used from: $1.45
No apologies here. I like Charlie Huston's writing. He's quick-witted, clever stories, and his books are nice breaks from my project management writing. This book, while not my favorite Huston, is still pulp noir and enjoyable. If you like Tarantino you'll like Huston's books.
The Dream ManagerThe Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly
Buy new: $15.96 / Used from: $9.50
Here’s a parable that posits if we help others reach their dreams we're helping ourselves as well. The book is really a challenge for us to help others. I really enjoyed this book and felt that it aligns with my core beliefs as a writer and trainer. While it's not a complicated story, the implementation of Kelly's theme is pure. Good work.
Motivation: Spark Initiative. Inspire Action. Achieve Your Goal.Motivation: Spark Initiative. Inspire Action. Achieve Your Goal. by Tom Gorman
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $0.01
Excellent book. Gorman writes on the science, philosophy, and inspiration behind what motivates people. This is not some cheesy get-fired-up book; it's a logical, positive message on understanding motivation and how find more of it. I'm glad I discovered this book and encourage you to read it as well.
Ready for Anything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work and LifeReady for Anything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work and Life by David Allen
Buy new: $9.75 / Used from: $3.25
I hesitated when I purchased this book. I'm not into crazy organizational schemes, action lists, or workflows just to file or throw something away. However, I was pleasantly surprised with what David Allen had to say. While I didn't agree with all 52 productivity principles, I did learn something from many of them. I've adapted some new ways to organize my time, my desk, and workflow.
SaturdaySaturday by Ian McEwan
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
Wonderful, lush writing. Saturday, as you might guess, takes place all in one day. McEwan sets up peaks and valleys, hidden conflicts, agendas, and drama all strung along like beeps on a heart monitor across one day in a surgeon's life. There's a pulse, a beat, to the little incidents that happen throughout the book that pop in an exciting crescendo. Read it.
The Hidden Beauty of Everyday LifeThe Hidden Beauty of Everyday Life by Kent Nerburn
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $3.92
Nerburn's simple, elegant book reads like a devotional. It's an easy read with a central theme: enjoy, experience, all of life. A fine, thoughtful, book.
