John Prine was a battle-scarred veteran of the '70s "new Dylan" club and a superb craftsman whose modest commercial success found him without a major label deal in the '80s. Prine's solution was to move to Nashville and roll his own, setting up the tiny Oh Boy imprint and making records he wanted to hear, a survival game that paid off handsomely with this 1991 set, produced by Heartbreaker bassist Howie Epstein and boasting cameos from Phil Everly, Divinyls' Christina Amphlett, Tom Petty, old pal Bonnie Raitt, and another "new Dylan" alum, Bruce Springsteen. But it's Prine himself who holds your attention here, with his reliably fine songs mixing droll, dead-on narratives of recognizable Everymen, sweetly goofy parables, and unvarnished love songs that his craggy drawl inhabits with touching authority. --Sam Sutherland

One of Prine's Best
John Prine is one of my favorite artists. This album highlights his talent very well. It's been good to visit with him again.

John's Best
This is John's best album, and that's saying a lot. All the other reviewers here are right. The only thing I would add would be a nod to the late Howie Epstein who produced this wonderful stuff (and "Lost Dogs" as well)........

So hard to pick a favorite
John Prine is definitely one of my top 10 musicians. The man can write and sing songs from the heart. He draws from bitter-sweet witticism that pulls on the heart strings and makes you laugh and cry at the same time. He is able to say things in his songs you've always known or felt before but never were able to put it in words. I love all his music and it's near impossible to pick a favorite disc. This one comes close.

"Unlonely" is a fabulous love song and the music is so heart felt and uplifting. "Great Rain" has a bluesy spin that's very well done. "Everybody want's to Feel Like You" addresses the insensitive person in a relationship. And "The Missing Years" is simply a made up imaginative fantasy of what happened to Jesus during his "missing years." It's all great and each song you can relate to.

My only problem is, he has so many great songs on other CD's: "They Ought To Name a Drink After You." "Souvenirs." and "The Great Compromise" (from Dianmonds in the Rough). "He Was In Heaven Before He Died" (from Common Sense). "Illegal Smile." Sam Stone" "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into heaven Anymore" and "Angel From Montgomery" (John Prine). "People Puttin' People Down." "Unwed Fathers." and "Only Love" (Aimless Love). "Sweet Revenge." "Christmas In Prison." and "Dear Abby" (from Sweet Revenge). "If You Don't Want My Love." "Fish and Whistle." "There She Goes." "That's The Way That The World Goes Round." and Bruised Orange; Chain of Sorrow (from Bruised Orange). "Down By The SIde Of The Road" and "How Lucky" and a great version of "Killing the Blues"(from Pink Cadillac). "Ain't Hurtin' Nobody." "Lake Marie" and "Same Thing Happened To Me" (from Lost Dogs And Mixed Blessings). "Glory of True Love." "Long Monday." "Some Humans Ain't Human" and "She Is My Everything" (from Fair & Square) to name a few.
