LARRY DAY has illustrated several picture books, including Not Afraid of Dogs, an SCBWI Golden Kite Award winner, Duel! which received four starred reviews, and Let it Begin Here! He works in the advertising industry, and his illustrations have appeared in the Chicago Tribune Magazine and in several exhibits, including his own shows. Larry in Downers Grove, Illinois.
As he knows first hand, older siblings are not always as delighted by a new baby as the rest of the family. Richard was inspired to write Bye-Bye Baby! after his three year old son was unimpressed by the arrival of a new baby sister.
All the books they were reading had the same reassuring message—it may be different at first with this new person around, but eventually you will grow to love this person as much as your parents. But it became clear very quickly that this good wholesome message wasn’t exactly sinking in. Instead of growing to love the baby, Richard’s son was dreaming up ways to get rid of her.
“Mommy,” he asked one day, “maybe we should put the baby outside tonight so we won’t have to hear her cry?” Every day there was a new idea about how to dispose of his baby sister. “Tie her to the roof, flush her down the toilet, pack her up in a suitcase and send her away forever..."
At first alarmed, they soon realized jealousy is a common experience for a newly older sibling after hearing similar stories from their friends. Nowadays Richard’s son and daughter are good friends, and their hilarious stories inspired Bye-Bye Baby!, the perfect accompaniment for any family going through the roller coaster ride of emotions that a new arrival brings.

The perfect book for kids with a new sibling!
Felix is trouble in the best sense of the word. When baby sis comes home from the hospital, watch out! A trip to the zoo inspires creative solutions for Felix's problem: With the help of an elephant, a hippo and a giraffe, Felix just might be able to get rid of her for good! Funny, dark, and true, Richard Morris captures the jealousy and hurt feelings that go along with being a new big brother... and Larry Day's illustrations are absolutely breathtaking! Parents will love this as much as their kids!
This is an adorable, yet very serious story about a sibling not wanting or welcoming his baby sister into the home!
When that baby sister was born Felix sat in his sandbox with his stuffed donkey, Poncho. His poor stuffie was buried up to his neck and Felix just looked angry as he filled buckets with sand and upended them around Poncho. Later he bumped his chin on the slide and he just stood there and cried into Poncho's body. It didn't even matter that his belly button showed or his sneaker's were untied. He was just mad and upset. When his mother came home with that baby, he sat scowling on the other end of the couch and clutched Poncho tightly to his chest. His parents were smiling, but it was nothing to smile about. Felix did not like that baby sister!
That baby cried late into the night and woke up early. Felix told Poncho that "This isn't working out . . . I think we should take her back." Well, they didn't take her back and they kept her. She was beginning to walk and when they went to the zoo he would cuddle up in the back seat of the car with Poncho. SHE was back there too, clapping her hands and sucking on her pacifier. When they were at the zoo he imagined that each animal they saw could get rid of his sister. He looked at the wide-open mouth of the hippo and said to himself, "It could eat my baby sister." Was there anything that would make him actually like this baby sister?
This is an adorable, yet very serious story about a sibling not wanting or welcoming his baby sister into the home. The tale was very realistic and will strike a chord with many parents who don't quite know how to address the situation. The author captured Felix's angst perfectly and the artwork complimented it right down the little scowl and set eyebrows. If you are planning on welcoming a new baby into the home and have a Felix, you just might want to consider this book! WaaaWaaaaaaaaa!

This is quite possibly the most perfect book to give to an older child once a new baby has come along. It can be really difficult to accept a new sibling, when the first-born is used to getting all the attention. This humorous look into that exact situation could help many families help ease the transition from only child to happy duo.
Felix has recently been promoted to big brother status and he is none too happy about it. He was perfectly content to have Poncho, his stuffed donkey as a steadfast companion - not some drippy baby. A marked difference is that while Poncho is silent, the new baby terribly LOUD. She's so loud she keeps Felix up at night and gives his mom a headache.
Helpfully, Felix suggests they return the new baby, but his parents seem to be pretty attached to her. When she is old enough to walk, the whole family takes a trip to the zoo. Felix amuses himself by imagining how each animal could take care of his little sister problem. The elephant is big enough to sit on her and the hippopotamus is big enough to eat her right up. The giraffe could put her up in a tall tree and Felix would never have to see her again!
Felix is having such a good time at the zoo that he doesn't want to leave. Forcibly removed, he pitches a fit and cries all the way home. Neither his mom nor his dad know how to soothe him .... but his new baby sister does. At that point Felix comes to the realization that she truly cares about him and in turn, he doesn't mind her being around so much.
We all know the feelings of jealousy that can erupt when a new baby makes an appearance. This is a humorous way to show an older brother or sister that they aren't the only ones that feel like ditching the new baby. I love the surly expressions on Felix's face in the illustrations. He looks like he has a lot of choice words about this new sister of his!
