One of my Personal Favorites
This is the album were they began going down the path, with the majority of the memebers that we would come to know as the Mighty Elements. This album is raw, funky & progressive. The band doesn't hold back in the least, nasty guitar and bass, the usual amazing vocals and one of the, if not the, greatest instrumental offerings ever in the song "Power" composed by Maurice White. That song is truly a gift from above brought down and given to us the listener.
Although, this is this is Earth, Wind and Fire's 3rd album by that name, only 2 of the original members are left at this point, Maurice and his brother, Verdine on bass. This album introduces us to Larry Dunn, Phillip Bailey & Ralph Johnson all of whom would form the foundation of greatness that was about to define the Elements as the greatest band ever!
Other personal favorites on the record are the cover to "Where Have the Flowers Gone" were we get our 1st taste of Phillip Bailey's incredible vocals. I also love "Time is on Your Side", "What About the Children" is raw funk & "Mom" is a wonderful tribute to mothers everywhere and what the feminine aspect truly gives if only received.
Once again this album showcases Maurice White's incredible songwriting, musicianship & production skills. This is probably their hardest album and one that i would highly recommend.
When they did it all
This album started it all for me as an Earth Wind & Fire fan. They played exciting rhythums in "Power" sang meaninful songs like "mom" "Where have all the Flowers Gone"and in this collection still had a female presents in Jessica Cleaves I had to have it again. It still is one of their greatest and that saying a lot for the elements.
Powerful power
This is the EWF album which has, to these ears, the great distinction of having their best ever track on it - "Power".
This is an utterly awesome instrumental piece with some of the best guitar and soprano sax playing ever recorded by anyone. It's an 8 minute jazzy, funky, tour de force recorded in 1972 well before the band adopted the more pop-oriented style of the late 70s. The band were past masters at instrumentals during this early phase. Awesome fuzz guitar and soprano sax overlay driving drums and bass. The bass really adds something to the sound. It even gets a quiet Brit like me saying "This track really cooks!" At the same time it's a highly tuneful, purposeful and very structured piece of music. Every second of the 8 minutes counts. In short, utterly brilliant.
In my opinion this track is one of the best pieces of music ever recorded (up there with the masterpieces "Melting Pot" by Booker T and the MGs and "Soul Sacrifice" by Santana.
"Power" does not feature on many (if any currently?) EWF compilation albums, which is a real pity. EWF Fans are missing out on a great treat. I'm glad I'm not alone in being an admirer of this track - another reviewer has recently written that it was a gift from heaven, brought down to earth. How true.
Even though the rest of this album does not match "Power" (how could it?), there are one or two punchy/funky vocal tracks ("Time is on your side" is really wonderful). But this really is an essential purchase just for "Power"!
